23 cameos you may have missed on 'Friends'

Everyone knows that Paul Rudd and Tom Selleck had cameos in Friends . They ended up playing larger roles in the series as more of a recurring character than a brief run like the others on this list. Even Michael Rappaport was left off this list because he was more involved in this series as a love interest of Phoebe's in Season 5. While there's a core five that was the main focus of this show, many big-time actors popped up in various roles throughout the 10-season NBC hit sitcom.

Anna Faris

Anna Faris
The WB Television Network

Appearing in four episodes, including the second to last episode of the series, she played the role of Erica. She was the surrogate mother that had chosen Chandler and Monica as the parents, though under false terms since she had their names mixed with a reverend and a doctor. Chandler ends up confessing, pulls off an epic monologue that convinces her to choose them regardless of their occupations, and sets up the two to become parents by the series' end.

Danny DeVito

Danny DeVito
The WB Television Network

Roy "Goodbody" is an icon in Friends lore. He appeared in "The One Where the Stripper Cries." As the title suggests, that's exactly what happens when DeVito's character, donning policeman attire for his strip show, surprises Phoebe at her bachelorette party. He was the last one Monica and Rachel could find in the yellow pages. It's an incredible scene where he cries after Phoebe refuses to have the girls pay him before coming to grips with the situation.

George Clooney

George Clooney
The WB Television Network/IMDb

It was only one episode and a brief appearance, but it was a good one. As he was known in the episode, Dr. Mitchell and Noah Wyle's Dr. Rosen take Rachel and Monica on a double date after meeting at the hospital before a horrible date ensues as the two girls get in a debate the entire time.

Denise Richards

Denise Richards
The WB Television Network

Despite being family, she only came on one episode, "The One With Ross and Monica's Cousin." Cassie arrives before Chandler and Monica's wedding and stays at Ross' apartment. Surprised at how attractive she has become since he last saw her, Ross tells himself that the tension he's feeling is also reciprocated by his cousin, leading to a totally uncomfortable move being made by Ross on her.

Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen
The WB Television Network

Ryan is a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy who dated Phoebe. He's someone who she had previously dated but had never been shown until his one appearance in Season 2. That's when he comes to visit her while she has chicken pox. He doesn't let this stop them from continuing their date as he catches them, and then the two spend the night itchy.

Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning
The WB Television Network

"The One With Princess Consuela" is when a young Fanning makes her cameo. Mackenzie resides in a house Monica and Chandler are considering buying, but Joey doesn't want them to move out. He ends up talking to the young girl who lives with her parents there as Fanning's character ends up speaking the truth to him, letting him know that he can't stand in the way of their happiness.

John Stamos

John Stamos
The WB Television Network

It was very brief, but Stamos showed up in "The One With the Donor" as Zack. He is invited over to Chandler and Monica's apartment, where he learns that he's there to be their sperm donor. Chandler knows him from work, and Monica begins to see his appeal when he puts a coaster under his cup. The two end up scaring him off, but eventually, Monica realizes she doesn't want any other man contributing to this, which leads to the two considering adoption.

Helen Hunt

Helen Hunt
The WB Television Network

She has a brief spot as Jamie Buchman, showing up in Central Perk, where she mistakes Phoebe for her twin, Ursula. What made this cameo stand out is that Hunt played the same character over in Mad About You, which aired for eight seasons on NBC.

Winona Ryder

Winona Ryder
The WB Television Network

Ryder pops in during "The One With Rachel's Big Kiss" and serves as the woman who is Rachel's sorority sister she kissed once back in college. Joey loves hearing this as he clamors for more information. There's a hilarious back and forth as Rachel attempts to get her to remember, eventually leading to Melissa believing Rachel loves her and confessing to being in love with Rachel this entire time. Rachel brushes her off as Ryder's work is done, but not before Phoebe kisses Rachel to "see what all the fuss was about."

Robin Williams and Billy Crystal
The WB Television Network

Tomas gets a fleeting opening scene in "The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion," where he is also joined by Billy Crystal. The two appear at Central Perk in what seems to be a heated conversation that the group listens in on. There's not a lot going on here, but seeing this level of actor on the show is still cool.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts
The WB Television Network/IMDb

Roberts plays Susie Moss, who ends up going on a date with Chandler after meeting on a movie set. She convinces him to wear her panties on a date, strip down to nothing but underwear, and eventually steals his clothes. She shouts, "This is for fourth grade!" That triggers Chandler, who realizes it's because he made up the "Susie Underpants" nickname back in school.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme
The WB Television Network

Appearing as himself, he ends up in the crosshairs of Monica and Rachel. The two get in a fight over who gets to date him since Monica is a fan of his, but Rachel is the one who approaches him. They fight before realizing that they're better off without him.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt
The WB Television Network

One of the iconic cameos, Pitt's Will Colbert was friends in high school with Ross. He was overweight then, which is why Rachel was mean to him. He and Ross co-founded the "I Hate Rachel Greene Club." They were the ones who spread a rumor about Rachel being a hermaphrodite. He shows up on Thanksgiving for dinner, where the truth comes out from their school years.

Reese Witherspoon
The WB Television Network

Her appearance lasted two episodes as Jill, the youngest sister of Rachel's. She comes to her apartment after their father cuts her off, then dates Ross to prove a point to Rachel. Ross ends up realizing he's in the middle of a feud and ends things with Jill, which causes her to leave town.

Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis
The WB Television Network

Willis' Paul showed up in three episodes. He was the father of Elizabeth, a student that Ross was dating. Paul disliked Ross, but through Ross, Paul met Rachel, and the two dated. Besides the uncomfortable dinner scene between the two, his best scene was when he revealed he was picked on when he was young and called "Chicken Boy." Emotional when reflecting on this, Paul ends up hugging Ross with Joey walking in on them, and he, too, gets in the hug.

Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller
The WB Television Network

Stiller plays the part of Tommy to perfection as a hot-headed, screaming maniac. He enters the picture because he's dating Rachel, who doesn't know the rage he has. Only Ross is privy to seeing his meltdowns until, eventually, Joey and Chandler's chicken urinates on him, and he blows a gasket in front of Rachel, thus ending their fling.

Tate Donavon

Tate Donavon
The WB Television Network

His cameo stretched across five episodes after meeting Rachel while trying on a suit at Bloomingdale's. She throws a fake party to impress him, which only scares him off as he realizes it is all to seduce him. Talk of marriage even popped up, which really sent him heading for the hills, only for him to return for one more shot before seeing Rachel, ironically, in a wedding dress.

Jon Lovitz

Jon Lovitz
The WB Television Network

Steve ended up being in two episodes, including the aptly named "The One With The Stoned Guy." He's a restauranteur that is introduced to Monica through Phoebe. He shows up to review Monica's cooking as he's looking for a new chef, except that he's under the influence. His character pops up later in the series as Phoebe intentionally sets him up to have a bad blind date with Rachel, so she gets back with Ross. Steve is still on drugs, this time saying his career has been lost because of his usage.

Jon Favreau

Jon Favreau
The WB Television Network

Pete falls for Monica while she's working as a waitress. It's later revealed that he's rich — like, really rich. Except he still doesn't feel complete unless he gets a shot to fight in the UFC. This is a wild storyline that plays out over six episodes. The gang goes to see his first fight, which ends badly for Pete. Monica can't fathom dating a man who is obsessed with this vicious sport, and Favreau's run comes to an end.

Elle Macpherson

Elle Macpherson
The WB Television Network

Joey's roommate in Season 6, Janine appeals to all of the guys, including Joey. She has many great moments, including "The One With the Routine," the show's best New Year's episode. That's when Joey kisses her for the first time. The two end up doing a double date with Monica and Chandler, which Janine hates because she finds them weird. The always-loyal Joey won't tolerate her insults, and the two split up as she moves out.

Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields
The WB Television Network

Another cameo appearance involves one of Joey's dates. Shields plays Erika, who eventually lands a date with Joey. The only problem is that she's a hardcore fan of his Drake Ramoray character, to the point where she's obsessive. She believes Joey is actually the person on screen, and the only way for Joey to escape her is by coming up with a story that the gang goes along with in which he's the evil twin of his character. Erika is appalled and leaves.

Hank Azaria

Hank Azaria
The WB Television Network

If it weren't going to be Mike, then David would have been the person for Phoebe. After boldly introducing himself to her at Central Perk, the two have a hot and heavy connection until he and his business partner learn they've received an opportunity in Minsk. He stays there until Season 9, when he professes his love to Phoebe, only for her to admit that she's madly in love with Mike.

Christina Applegate
The WB Television Network

In two episodes as Rachel's sister, Amy always finds her way to Rachel following a breakup. The show always shows her referring to Emma by a different name, showing how out of touch she truly is. A lot is revealed about this character, even the fact that she had apparently made out with Barry, Rachel's former fiance, while they were together. Applegate's performance earned her an Emmy.
