The 2024 IPL has seen incredible batting records being broken. It has seen 18 200+ scores in just 39 matches. It has also seen two matches with the aggregate of 500+ runs, which are the two highest in the history of the tournament. Along with that, four out of the top five highest IPL totals were scored in this season. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has also scored two 275+ runs.

This rising trend in high scoring matches can be attributed to one rule change, the Impact Player rule (IP Rule). Teams are now able to keep their batting depth till number eight, like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and SRH. Now players have come out and have spoken against the IP rule, especially bowlers.

Axar Patel, Delhi Capitals’ (DC) star all-rounder, has spoken against the rule in a media interaction. He has blamed the rule for his diminishing role as a batter, while also pointing out how it has become more difficult for bowlers. He’s also afraid his spot will be in danger in the future, with teams preferring to play a pure bowler or batter.

DC bowler Mukesh Kumar has also spoken against the rule. He noted how only the IPL has 12 players, unlike international cricket. Even Kumar called out for the rule to be abolished to help out bowlers. Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, has also admitted he isn’t a fan of the rule.

Mohammed Siraj requests IPL to abolish Impact Player rule

Mohammad Siraj is another pacer who has called for the IP player to be abolished. He expressed his views in a media interaction before the start of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s fixture with KKR.

The pacer noted how flat wickets have made batting easier and the implementation of IP has made it easier for batters. He wanted better bowling conditions to ensure there aren’t more 250+ scores.

Siraj has not had a good IPL so far. The Indian pacer has picked up only five wickets in seven matches. He has a high average of 53.8 and a terrible economy of 10.35. He will now play on 25th April against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 25th April in his hometown, Hyderabad.
