Rohit Sharma has played a captain’s knock to bail India out of choppy waters against England in the ICC World Cup 2023 fixture at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. He missed out on a hundred but the significance of his 101-ball 87 is more than a century given how difficult the conditions were to bat.

David Willey clipped the 91-run partnership between Rohit and KL Rahul with the wicket of the latter. The miscued hack ballooned up high in the air and Jonny Bairstow at mid-on had all the time in the world to settle underneath the high ball. Such an aggressive shot probably wasn’t needed at that stage with India having resurrected the innings well after being down in the dumps at 40/3. There were 20 overs to go and the acceleration could’ve been delayed a touch, but Rahul felt the need to step on the gas pedal only to depart for 39 off 58 balls.
