Started with the label as the worst Power 5 quarterback and ended the season graded among the best. That’s the 2023 Garrett Greene story.

WVU’s signal caller has been awarded a 91.0 grade by PFF for his work throughout the 2023 season. This places Greene in a tie for the sixth best with Washington’s Michael Penix Jr.

Greene is on a top 10 list that includes a Heisman winner, quarterbacks who led their team to the College Football Playoff, a Nation Champion and quarterbacks viewed as NFL prospects, and in some cases players who are all of the above. While Greene is not as accomplished as the others, unlike some of his peers, his college career is not over.

Greene is returning to West Virginia to lead the Mountaineers again in 2024. And Greene is so excited about the idea of his team building off a nine-win season, he proclaimed “anybody can call me and I’m not leaving” when asked about his future when the winter Transfer Portal window opened.

Greene credits his time at the Manning Passing Academy for helping to mold him into a more polished quarterback. He even won back-to-back Manning Awards for his play.

WV Sports Now talked with Greene about his experience at the camp and how it will make him a better quarterback.

“It was an unbelievable experience, learning from the Mannings’, learning from the best, being around some of the best quarterbacks in the county. We had 3 or 4 days, a few workouts and it was just awesome to be able to pick the brain of Peyton, Eli and Archie,” said Greene about being around the Manning family.

Throughout the 2023 season, one that did see him miss some time due to injury, Greene passed for 2,178 yards, ran for 708 more and recorded 28 touchdowns with only five turnovers. Greene also threw for 228 yards and a touchdown while adding 64 more yards on the ground in WVU’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina.

For a related story, Garrett Greene explains what being called the “ultimate competitor” means to him.
