Wake Forest record-setting QB enters transfer portal

Wake Forest redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman is entering the transfer portal and is expected to land with Notre Dame, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel.

During his fifth season with the Demon Deacons, Hartman registered a career-best 63.1% completion percentage with 3,701 passing yards, 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, along with a career-high 159.4 passing efficiency rating in 12 games. Hartman helped lead Wake Forest to a 27-17 victory over Missouri in the Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, finishing 23-for-36 for 280 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while earning game MVP honors.

Hartman set the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record for touchdown passes (110) during his career with the Demon Deacons and racked up the second-most passing yards in ACC history (12,967) as well, behind only Philip Rivers.

The 23-year-old missed the Demon Deacons' first game of the 2022 campaign due to a blood clot that was termed as a non-football-related medical condition but returned for the team's Week 2 contest against Vanderbilt. Upon Hartman's return, the school revealed that he had Paget-Schroetter syndrome, a blood clot that often is linked to repeated strenuous activity.

Even before the 2022 season, Hartman had already set the program record for touchdowns. Across 14 games in 2021, he led the ACC in pass attempts (508), interceptions (14) and touchdowns responsible for (50), while finishing second in passing touchdowns (39) and third in pass completions (299) and passing yards (4,228) as well.

According to Thamel's report, Wake Forest had been expecting to lose Hartman, and with Notre Dame seeing Drew Pyne transferring to Arizona State, they have a need for a quarterback. Thamel writes that according to a source, Hartman is "seeking a high-end situation to keep him from declaring for the NFL draft and will take a week to evaluate all his options."

Per Thamel, NFL scouts have been projecting Hartman as a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick, so the hope would be to improve his stock with one more year of college football.
