The UNLV Rebels, who are coming off a near-upset against the California Golden Bears, took care of the North Texas Mean Green on Saturday 58-27 to improve their record to 2-1 on the season.

This is just the second time the Rebels have a positive record during coach Marcus Arroyo’s tenure. The team has now matched their win total from last year. With this victory, the Rebels even out the all-time series at 1-1 against the Mean Green.

It was the QB Doug Brumfield and RB Aidan Robbins show today as they had the Mean Green defense on edge the whole game.

Brumfield started the fireworks during the first quarter, as he connected with WR Kyle Williams for a 23-yard score to put the Rebels up 7-0 early in the game. Mean Green DB Kaylon Horton fielded the ensuing kickoff and took it 99 yards to the house to tie up the game. The UNLV defense blocked a punt for a safety to regain the lead 9-7. Towards the end of the quarter, Mean Green K Ethan Mooney kicked a 31-yard field goal to gain a one-point lead at 10-9.

It was the Robbins show in the second quarter as he rushed in two touchdowns, but the Mean Green offense scored a touchdown and a field goal to keep the game close. The Rebels went into half up 23-20.

Brumfield matched Robbins as he rushed for two touchdowns during the third quarter. The first was a 29-yard scramble that was Michael Vick-esque. Brumfield escaped the pocket and then made the defense look silly with an array of jukes.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Rebels had a 37-27 lead. The Rebel offense marched down the field during their first possession in the fourth quarter, with Robbins rushing in a one-yard touchdown to increase his total to three TDs on the day. Later in the quarter, Brumfield connected with WR Ricky White for a nine-yard TD, his second passing TD and fourth total on the day. During garbage time, Rebels DB Cameron Oliver intercepted a ball on the Mean Green 20-yard line and took it the house for a pick-six.
