Despite a respectable effort, the UNLV Rebels (1-1) could not secure their second straight win to open the 2022 season Saturday night against Cal, losing 20-14 after a hard-fought game.

Despite not holding a lead for the entire contest, UNLV had a chance to drive down the field and win with a touchdown. But although QB Doug Brumfield and company had possession in the Golden Bears’ half of the field with less than a minute to play, the Golden Bear defense held strong by registering back-to-back sacks before intercepting Brumfield on a desperation throw to end the game.

QB Doug Brumfield finished with a final line of 18/33 passing for 206 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Wide receivers Ricky White and Kyle Williams combined for over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown, and transfer running back Aidan Robbins ran for 84 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to bring the Rebels within six.

Despite the loss, the Rebels look to be making strides under head coach Marcus Arroyo’s watch. After their opening win two weeks ago, the team had some time off to prepare for Cal. And despite not coming away with a win, the team competed and had a real chance to win late in the game. After going just 2-10 a year ago, it looks as though the Rebels will find better success in 2022.
