Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman on Johnny Manziel: 'I'm trying to be like him out there'

You don't get the nickname "Johnny Football" for being average, and at least as a college quarterback, Johnny Manziel was anything but.

Manziel caught the attention of the college football nation during his two-year stint at Texas A&M, and now current Aggies quarterback, Conner Weigman, has the unenviable task of trying to fill his shoes — as every quarterback at A&M since Manziel has tried to do.

For what it's worth, Weigman — while not a Heisman contender — has been great for the Aggies. He also got a chance to meet Manziel on the sideline during Texas A&M's latest game. Manziel, in the booth, told the SEC Network that he sees a bit of himself in Weigman.

After the game, Weigman revealed that he and the A&M legend had a conversation and the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner gave him some good advice.

“That was pretty cool, he came up to me on the sideline and just said keep doing what you’re doing,” Weigman said (h/t On3). “I just told him I’m trying to be like him out there.”

As a freshman, Weigman played in five games and secured four starts.

In his very first career start, against Ole Miss, he set a Texas A&M true freshman record with 338 yards thrown, and he threw four touchdowns.

So far this season, he's completed 74-of-105 passes for 909 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions in three games. He's also rushed for two scores and has the Aggies at 2-1 with a road loss to Miami.

“He looks great,” Manziel said of Weigman. “I think he’s growing every week, I think each week that goes on he’s gonna continue to get more comfortable and continue to go out there and sling it. For the quarterback position especially, I see a little bit of myself in him out there. He’s doing a really good job leading this team and he’s definitely got a fan in me and it’s fun to watch.”
