Texas A&M Aggies Top 2022 Offensive Recruit Shines Light On Doomed Program
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M Aggies have garnered national headlines in recent years. This is because they have always secured among the top national recruiting classes as of late. However, with results on the field not following, a previously undisclosed issue has been shared by one of their current players.

Texas A&M Internal Displeasure

If money cannot buy happiness, surely the false allure of money is even worse!

Amidst a  program that just fired long time coach Jimbo Fisher, and has just hired Mike Elko , wide receiver Evan Stewart commented on a post from Hayes Fawcett from On3 on Instagram.

no way 2 years ago you could’ve told me Jimbo would be fired, coaches leave, and half the class dip. How dat happen

This prompted the now analyzed response from Evan Stewart of:

I saw it coming freshman year when I didn’t get paid a dollar from a&m but “slice bread” had yall thinking we was all millionaires

Considering what the market dictates for high end players, and the NIL valuation of players, it really is hard to believe that one of the most sought after talents was not being compensated at the rate many would expect.

Texas A&M Aggies”Slice Bread”

This reference to an older Oklahoma fan post from user SlicedBread who alleged that recruiting funds for the Texas A&M Aggies ranging up to 30 million dollars for a recruiting class.

With rumors and even head coaches speculating on how much money boosters were able to organize to supplement their recruiting efforts, Jimbo Fisher publicly called out, not only the notion, but also user SliceBread:

This $30 million thing is a joke. This idea there’s some fund out there and it was written on BroBible by a guy named sliced bread and now all of a sudden the country believes it?

While the perception may make this previous statement seem implausible, given how things unfolded, and what players of the former staff are now saying, it does seem like he was telling the truth all along.

Texas A&M Recruiting Reality

While players may have been lured in to the Texas A&M Aggies by the possibility of a large payday, and the Texas A&M Aggies likely have no shortage of willing donors, the fact is that the payoff claims were at the very least grossly exaggerated. There are two strong pieces of evidence that support the latest comments from likely transfer portal entrant Evan Stewart.

First, according to public record, it shows that Texas A&M did indeed lead the nation in NIL activity amount. However, at just a little over $4 million, that is a far cry from the alleged tens of millions. Who knows how the program decided to allocate these resources to their players?

Additionally, Jimbo Fisher has always been known as a great recruiter, even prior to College Station. At Florida State he was able to consistently rake in top recruiting classes. While financial infrastructure was in some cases of course a factor, the fact is that he and his staff have also always been good at hitting the recruiting trail and connecting with perspective high school athletes.

Whether there was a false alignment of expectations, or financial incentives that did not come as anticipated, there is no reason to believe that Evan Stewart would lie about his lack of compensation. With players upset and leaving via the portal, the ultimate deciding factor was simply the lack of on field success.
