Oklahoma State Backup Quarterback, Son of Mike Gundy Enters Transfer Portal

Gunnar Gundy, son of Mike Gundy, is making his way out of Stillwater as he enters the transfer portal.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have had a tame start to the transfer portal. After a Big 12 Championship appearance and a coming bowl game against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl, there's good reason to believe a good amount of talent will be returning. 

Still, Gunnar Gundy is leaving the program. In the big picture, this probably makes the most sense. On the season, the Cowboys had a quarterback carousel, which saw Gundy throw 34 passes, completing 21 of them for 202 passing yards and one touchdown. 

As the Cowboys roll into a new Big 12 era, they're going to have a competitive quarterback position. Garret Rangel and Zane Flores are two young quarterbacks on the roster with the potential to take over as the starter. Maealiuaki Smith is a 2024 commit who will lobby for playing time. 

So, ultimately, Gundy will take off to a situation that will allow him to play more and more football, despite leaving his dad's program. 

This now makes three different Cowboys that have hit the transfer portal. Lardarius Webb Jr. was the first Cowboy to hit the portal, as the safety announced as such shortly after the Big 12 title game, which he didn't play in.

Freshman defensive lineman Ricky Lolohea was the second Cowboy to hit the portal, though things didn't ramp up after such. 

Gundy is the third Oklahoma State player to hit the portal. He initially joined the program as a walk-on scholarship quarterback. The graduate transfer played his high school football in Stillwater before playing four games in the 2022 season and three games in the 2023 season. 

With now three Cowboys hitting the portal, it'll be interesting to see how active Oklahoma State is in recruiting players out of the portal.
