NFC executive voices concerns about Jayden Daniels

It appears LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels didn't impress everybody in NFL circles with his pro day throwing session.

"I didn’t think the workout just blew anyone away," an unnamed NFC executive told NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "There was some mechanical stuff that didn’t look real clean. I thought the deep ball was kind of all over the place. When he sets his feet and he’s balanced, there’s really a good arm there. It’s a really natural stroke. But he missed some throws, some locations…What gives you a little pause is maybe he’s not as polished as a thrower as you maybe would have thought."

At this point, it would be difficult to find even one reputable draft analyst predicting that the Chicago Bears will grab anybody other than USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick. While it was previously thought that Daniels going to the Washington Commanders via pick No. 2 was a lock, that was before North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye and Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy impressed teams so much that some now wonder if Daniels could slide down the draft order.

For what it's worth, ESPN's Field Yates and multiple CBS Sports personalities continue to link Daniels with the Commanders at the draft's second pick. For a piece published Wednesday, Yates revealed he has Daniels as the second-ranked player on his draft board beneath only Williams.

An unnamed offensive coordinator who attended Daniels' pro day workout told Breer the signal-caller "looked good" during the session.

"He showed his fluidity and athleticism," that coordinator said. "The mid- to short-range accuracy is really easy for him. I feel like every one of these pro days is a little bit different. They didn’t get dramatic in the routes they ran with these guys. He handled it all well. It solidified him as one of the first two picks in the draft."

The coordinator also compared Daniels to Houston Texans quarterback and reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud. Herm Edwards coached Daniels at Arizona State and thinks the LSU star could be the league's next version of Philadelphia Eagles icon Randall Cunningham.

As of Wednesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Daniels as the betting favorite at -130 odds to be the draft's second pick. At that same time, DraftKings had Maye at +110 odds.
