Maryland Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa Enters Transfer Portal

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is hoping to receive one more year of eligibility from the NCAA. The Terrapins star has entered his name into the transfer portal and hopes to receive a waiver for an additional season.

Technically, Tagovailoa has utilized all of his eligibility, including the additional year granted from the NCAA because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the quarterback is hoping to receive a waiver from the organization because of the 2019 season.

While at Alabama, Tagovailoa appeared in five games — one more than the allotted amount to retain a redshirt. He played two snaps in the Crimson Tide's 38-7 win over Mississippi State that season, honoring his brother, Tua, who suffered a hip injury in the game.

“Honestly, if I could do it again, hopefully my brother doesn’t get injured and I’m not in that emotional state where I want to play in the game. If I got to do it over again, I wouldn’t have played in the game,” he told ESPN's Pete Thamel. “Coach asked me if I wanted to go in. Of course I wanted to go in and play for my brother. And that’s what happened.”

After the 2019 season, Tagovailoa entered the NCAA transfer portal and eventually committed to Maryland. He put together an impressive career with Mike Locksley in College Park.

In four seasons with the Terrapins, Tagovailoa threw for 11,256 yards and 76 touchdowns. He ended the 2023 campaign as the Big Ten's leading passer, throwing for 3,377 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Maryland appeared in three bowl games with Tagovailoa under center. 

Maryland finished the year with an 8-5 record, defeating Auburn 31-13 in the Music City Bowl. However, Tagovailoa opted out of the game.

If the NCAA does allow Tagovailoa to play an additional season, it is believed that Miami would be a strong contender to land the quarterback.
