Legendary Nebraska Cornhuskers Announcer Reveals Tragic Cancer Diagnosis

Longtime Nebraska Cornhuskers play-by-play announcer Greg Sharpe took to the podium Monday to reveal that he was diagnosed with cancer.

Sharpe explained that he was diagnosed a week or two ago and that the cancer is “in the pancreatic region of the body.” Sharpe is known as the “Voice of the Huskers” and has been with Nebraska Athletics since 2008.

Greg Sharpe took to the podium to announce his diagnosis to nix any potential rumors that could come about in the future.

An article from The Spun lists an important portion of what Sharpe said at the podium.

“Bottom line is I have been diagnosed with cancer. Found out a week or two ago. And so we’re getting close to the point where treatment will be necessary.

“And so it’s going to disrupt my work here on ‘Sports Nighty.’ Probably some baseball broadcasts and all that and that agitates me because this season is going so so well. So much fun being around that team. But we’ve got a great team of doctors that are putting together the plan. …

“My wife Amy has been a rock for the last month for me to lean on. And I’m so blessed to have somebody like her in my life and I’m sure those of you that have dealt with his know that you got to have that support system to kind of fight your way through this type of thing.

“… I want to get this thing, I want to whip its butt and get myself ready for football because I think we’re gonna have a fabulous, fabulous football season around here in the fall. So we’ll end it with that. Thank you all for your support.”

Sharpe plans to call as many baseball games as he can until treatment begins.

Greg Sharpe has solidified himself as the “Voice of the Huskers” over the last two decades of football and baseball, starting in 2008.

Since the days of star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and Nebraska making bowl games, Sharpe has been an integral part of Cornhusker nation.

Before joining Nebraska Athletics and the Huskers Radio Network, Share was a part of Kansas State Wildcat Athletics. He was the voice of Wildcat football and basketball from 1996 to 2002.
