Iowa State QB accused of betting on ISU sports, including football

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers is being accused of placing 26 wagers on the school's athletic programs, including a 2021 Cyclones game against Oklahoma State.

According to the Des Moines Register, the Story County Attorney's Office filed a criminal complaint Dekkers that charges him with tampering with records "related to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe into sports gambling."

The complaint alleges that a DraftKings account controlled by Dekkers placed more than 366 total bets, including the aforementioned 26 involving Iowa State sports.

Dekkers did not play in the 2021 football game against Oklahoma State as he was still the team's backup at the time. He did, however, start for the team this past season, passing for 3,044 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

According to the complaint, Dekkers' wagers totaled "over 2,799." That comes out to less than $10 per wager.

There are a lot of problems here for Dekkers. The first of which is the still unknown tampering charge related to the investigation. The second is that he allegedly placed bets on Iowa State games, including his own sport. The NCAA has new guidelines regarding gambling that prohibit athletes from betting on games involving their own school, and especially their own sport.

If it is proven that Dekkers did place the bets, he is facing the possibility of losing all of his remaining NCAA eligibility.
