Of all the coaches I could've expected to say Florida State deserves to be in the College Football Playoff, it certainly wasn't Guz Malzahn, who lost to the Seminoles in the final BCS National Championship as Auburn's head coach. Yet, here we are, without any comments from ACC coaches so far.

As we've documented a couple of times, media members around the country are asking head coaches what they thought of the College Football Playoff Committee's decision to leave undefeated Florida State out of the Playoff in favor of two one-loss teams in Alabama and Texas. Here's what Malzahn, now the head coach at UCF, had to say about it.

"I mean, I was real disappointed. You know, what football really is, is finding a way to overcome obstacles. I texted him after the game that was one of his best coaching jobs. I mean, their third quarterback in and that team finds a way," Malzahn said. "Defense played their best game against a top 20 offense, and they win, and they don't get rewarded, I think that's a bad look for football. I was deal disappointed personally. I'm one of those old school high school guys, worked my way up, not that I'm a Florida State fan by any means, I'm a Mike fan. I don't think it's good for football and they should be in."

"I'm sitting there trying to figure out like, Georgia, they haven't lost in three years and they lost by three points and they don't make it? I don't know. I think they need to take a serious look at how they're evaluating," Malzahn continued. "The good thing is that it's going to 12 and so this is probably the last year you'll have that but, I don't know – an undefeated team in a Power 5 conference, wins their conference championship, and they leave them out? And they use the excuse their quarterback's hurt? Nah, I don't go for that one."

The statement that stood out to me was "not that I'm a Florida State fan by any means, I'm a Mike (Norvell) fan. I don't think it's good for football and they should be in." He definitely called into question how the committee chooses who gets in and who doesn't, and is looking out for another head coach in the state.

UCF was at the center of their own disagreement with the College Football Playoff Committee in 2017, as they went 12-0, but ended up finishing 12th in the final poll, despite being in the top 10 of both the AP Poll and Coaches' poll. They received 4 1st place votes after the season in the AP Poll, which is enough to claim a national title. All of this was before Coach Malzahn got to UCF, though.

The big difference between the Knights and Florida State was 2017 UCF was still in the American conference at the time (a Group of 5 conference), and had only played one Power 5 team, a below-average Maryland. Florida State is in the ACC, which is supposed to be a Power 5 conference, but they still scheduled two SEC teams and won both. UCF's win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl only gave them more reason to complain.
