Florida State head coach Mike Norvell doesn't know how he contracted COVID-19

As Andrea Adelson of ESPN noted, Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell told reporters on Monday that he doesn't know how he came into contact with the coronavirus and that he followed all of the university's safety protocols.

Florida State announced over the weekend that Norvell tested positive for the virus and will miss at least Saturday's game against Miami as he isolates inside his home for a minimum of 10 days. FSU is set to host Jacksonville State on Oct. 3.

Norvell, who says he feels well and produced a pair of negative tests last week before the positive result, could be cleared to return to the practice field on Sept. 28.

"It's extremely disappointing," Norvell told media members during a Zoom conference call. "This game is one of the great games in all of college football. When I got this job, this game, Florida, those are each and every year games that mean so much to so many. Not being able to be active during the 3 1/2 hours the game is going to be taking place, it's going to hurt, but the reality is I do get to make an impact, and I'll get to make an impact in every aspect of our preparation, everything leading up to it."

He continued:

"We've adhered to all our policies and protocols since my positive and going through that process of contact tracing, and I'm really appreciative of the administration and our players and staff for how we operate and what we do to limit that contact in all regards. We've gone through our process and feel very confident in how things will continue on within not only this week but the rest of the season."

It's believed the Florida State-Miami game isn't in jeopardy as of Monday afternoon, but the Seminoles will undergo additional testing this week. Florida State could request to postpone or cancel the fixture if it's deemed handfuls of players must quarantine before Saturday.

Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen is serving as Norvell's temporary replacement through the upcoming weekend. Florida State fell to Georgia Tech 16-13 in its season opener on Sept. 12.
