Epic Miami meltdown recalls another terrible Mario Cristobal decision

Miami should have read Mario Cristobal's cover letter.

The Hurricanes lost in the most inexplicable way against Georgia Tech after head coach Cristobal failed to run victory formation on a third-and-10 with under 40 seconds remaining and Tech without a timeout.

Running back Donald Chaney Jr. fumbled the ball and the Yellow Jackets went 74 yards in 25 seconds to escape with a 23-20 win.

During a similar sequence in 2018 as Oregon's head coach against Stanford, Cristobal made the same awful decision when he could have ended the game by taking a knee once Justin Herbert gained a first down after Stanford burned its timeouts.

Instead, running back C.J. Verdell fumbled and Stanford won in overtime.

That's an indefensible mistake to make once, let alone twice. A coach's job is to put his players in a position to succeed, and he failed at doing that in Week 6.

Miami should be 5-0 with pipe dreams of crashing the College Football Playoff. Instead, thanks to Cristobal, it's 4-1 and the biggest joke of the weekend.

After performing the same act twice, Cristobal's act is growing stale. Feel bad for the players, who were left wondering aloud "What the f--- are we doing?"

Miami football itself doesn't deserve any sympathy. Cristobal told us who he was years ago and it hired him anyway.
