Did Doug Williams' comments lead to Art Briles' ouster?
MCT

Grambling State’s decision to hire Art Briles was met with plenty of controversy and outcry. That obviously had a hand in his quick departure, but one voice may have mattered more than others.

Legendary Grambling State quarterback Doug Williams, later a Super Bowl winner with Washington, may have been a key factor in Baylor pulling the plug on Briles. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic noted that Williams still maintains significant influence at the school, and that the university would have clearly taken note of Williams’ recent comments.

Williams had said last week he would not support the school as long as Briles was employed. Backlash to the hire was likely anticipated by Grambling, but they may not have expected one of their most famous alumni to be so publicly blunt.

The 66-year-old Briles was forced out Monday after less than a week as offensive coordinator. He has not coached at the college level since Baylor fired him for allegedly mishandling or covering up sexual assault cases involving football players.
