College football head coaches already on the hot seat for 2016

College football head coaches already on the hot seat.

Steve Addazio, Boston College

After falling to 0-8 in the ACC and 3-9 overall last season, Adazzio needs to rebound in his fourth season at Boston College. In particular, the offense needs to show much better than it did last season. The Eagles lost 17-14 to Georgia Tech in Week 1, managed only 26 points against a mediocre UMass team and were shut out vs. Virginia Tech thus far in 2016.

Gary Andersen, Oregon State

Oregon State has the type of investment in Andersen that comes with big expectations after he was summoned from Wisconsin. Andersen went 0-9 in the Pac-12 and 2-10 overall last season, and lost at Minnesota in Week 1. The Beavers need to show progress this season, and a rough schedule won't help them.

David Bailiff, Rice

The head man at Rice since 2007, Bailiff is trying to rebound from a 5-7 season in 2015. The early returns aren't good, with Rice losing its first three games by double digits. Those include losses to Western Kentucky and Army. The team hasn't scored more than 14 points in a game either.

David Beaty, Kansas

The head-coaching merry-go-round in Lawrence isn't good for the program, but neither is losing every game. The Jayhawks went 0-12 in Beaty's first season before beating Rhode Island in the first game of 2016. They lost to a bad Ohio squad the following week and were pummeled by Memphis.

5 of 25

Tracy Claeys, Minnesota

Tracy Claeys, Minnesota

Claeys went 2-4 as Jerry Kill's replacement last season but has started this season 2-0 against mediocre opponents in Oregon State and Indiana State. The Gophers expect a bowl appearance, and the team has the schedule to do it, needing only four more wins against the likes of Colorado State, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois, Purdue and Northwestern.

Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State

Ron Chenoy / USA Today Sports Images

DeRuyter started his Fresno State career with three straight bowl appearances, but the Bulldogs went 3-9 last season and haven't looked great early this year. They took a brutal 43-10 loss at Nebraska in Week 1 and lost by 35 points to Toledo in Week 3.

7 of 25

Dave Doeren, NC State

Dave Doeren, NC State

Doeren has two consecutive bowl appearances, but a Week 2 loss at East Carolina makes his seat a bit warmer. The Wolfpack hasn't even reached the tough part of its schedule, which includes Notre Dame, Clemson, Louisville, Florida State, Miami and North Carolina.

James Franklin, Penn State

Franklin knew the expectations when he arrived at Penn State, and he hasn't met them yet. He went 7-6 in each of his first two seasons, and an early season loss at Pitt won't help him. The Nittany Lions have to play all the Big Ten powers this season, including Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State.

Paul Haynes, Kent State

Paul Haynes, Kent State

Haynes has yet to put together a winning season now in his fourth year at Kent State, and he's started this season with two losses. Kent State was handled by Penn State 33-13 in Week 1 before losing a four-overtime game against North Carolina A&T in Week 2. Facing a tough MAC schedule, it's tough to see how this season will turn out positively.

10 of 25

Darrell Hazell, Purdue

Darrell Hazell, Purdue
Caylor Arnold / USA Today Sports Images

Hazell hasn't won more than three games in a season since joining Purdue in 2013, and a 38-20 loss in Cincinnati in Week 2 doesn't help. Purdue has a very easy Big Ten schedule this year, avoiding Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State, so Hazell's odds of making a bowl and keeping his job do increase.

11 of 25

Mark Helfrich, Oregon

The Ducks have started the year 2-1, but they had a tough loss to Nebraska and face a very difficult Pac-12 schedule ahead. The Oregon program is all Helfrich's now in his fourth year, and fans weren't exactly dancing in the streets last season with an 8-4 regular-season record. The defense continues to struggle, and further regression could cause the rumors to surface.

12 of 25

Clay Helton, USC

USC's lofty expectations took a punch to the gut when the Trojans were embarrassed 52-6 by Alabama in Week 1. They have arguably the toughest schedule in college football season, now having lost to Stanford and still looking at Oregon, Washington, UCLA and Notre Dame. Helton is only in his first full season, but just sneaking in with a bowl appearance won't win him much support.

13 of 25

Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech

Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech

Johnson's 17-14 win over Boston College in Week 1 wasn't a great sign for a program trying to rebound from a poor 2015 season. Fortunately, Georgia Tech does avoid Florida State on the ACC schedule this season, but it still faces Clemson, Miami and North Carolina. Johnson likely needs to make a bowl this season, and he's off to a strong 3-0 start.

14 of 25

Brad Lambert, Charlotte

Considered by some to be the worst team in the FBS, Charlotte lost 70-14 at Louisville in Week 1. The 49ers won only two games in their inaugural year in Conference USA and certainly need to progress this season.

15 of 25

Mike Leach, Washington State

Mike Leach, Washington State

Leach is probably the only reason Washington State is relevant, and he has made a bowl twice in his four full seasons. However, the 2016 season is off to a very poor start with consecutive losses, and Leach hasn't even reached the Pac-12 schedule. The expectations were high with Luke Falk at quarterback, so a major regression could cause a stir.

16 of 25

Gus Malzahn, Auburn

It's all about offense under Malzahn, and Auburn fans are losing patience for the man who was once considered an offensive prodigy. Auburn only scored 13 points against Clemson and 16 vs. Texas A&M, and has a brutal schedule ahead that includes LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama.

17 of 25

Derek Mason, Vanderbilt

Going on his third season at Vanderbilt, Mason has yet to make a bowl game. He faces a fan base that is losing patience, and a Week 1 home loss to South Carolina 13-10 and blowout Week 3 loss to Georgia Tech don't help.

18 of 25

Les Miles, LSU

Miles reportedly received death threats after LSU's 16-14 loss to Wisconsin in Week 1. Despite a roster with elite talent, the Tigers have struggled to muster much offense and benched quarterback Brandon Harris in Week 2. Miles was nearly fired at the end of last season, and now even his supporters are questioning him.

19 of 25

Chuck Martin, Miami (OH)

Chuck Martin, Miami (OH)

Martin went 5-19 in his first two seasons at Miami and started this season 0-3. It's difficult to see how this season goes any better after his rough start.

20 of 25

Paul Petrino, Idaho

Paul Petrino, Idaho
James Snook / USA Today Sports Images

Idaho just beat Montana State 20-17 in Week 1 before getting blown out at Washington in Week 2 and Washington State in Week 3. Those results was to be expected, but Idaho was just 6-29 in three seasons under Petrino coming into season season. Petrino must make further progress after winning four games last year.

21 of 25

Mike Riley, Nebraska

Some questioned the hiring of Riley last season, and the questions persisted after going 5-7 during the regular season. The Huskers have started this season 3-0 with two huge wins against subpar opponents, along with a big win against Oregon. He needs to keep up the progress.

22 of 25

Mark Stoops, Kentucky

A supposed defensive whiz, Stoops' Wildcats allowed a combined 131 points in Kentucky's first three games of the season. The Wildcats lost a big lead to Southern Miss in Week 1, losing the game 44-35, and face a major uphill climb with a schedule that includes Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Louisville. Stoops probably needs to make a bowl to keep his job after failing in his first three seasons with the program.

23 of 25

Ron Turner, Florida International

Florida International has shown improvement in Turner's three seasons, but that was capped off with a 5-7 season last year. The team likely needs to make a bowl this season, and it was blown out in its first two games of the season against Indiana and Maryland.

24 of 25

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M

Raymond Carlin III / USA Today Sports Images

After losing two top quarterback recruits and making the wrong type of noise off the field over the last year, Texas A&M and Sumlin are working to rehab their image. He got off to a great start with a 31-24 overtime win vs. UCLA in Week 1, but the tough SEC West schedule still lies ahead. The Aggies haven't gone better than 4-4 in the SEC over the last three seasons, and they likely need to improve this season. That won't be an easy task with games against Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU.

25 of 25

Mark Whipple, UMass

Now in his second stint at UMass, Whipple went 3-9 in his first two seasons at the school and has started 1-2 this year. The Minutemen are really struggling to develop offense, with only one touchdown in each of their first two games before scoring 21 points against lowly Florida International.
