Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby: Schools leaving NCAA is unlikely

While some schools may not be happy with the NCAA, a breakaway league still looks unlikely to one Power 5 commissioner. He has a good reason behind that thinking, too.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby suggested that schools leaving the NCAA, or even Division 1, is unlikely. The key reason is that not everyone would win in a new league, including several programs very used to success.

Bowlsby is correct, of course. High-profile programs would inevitably have to deal with a lot more losing than they’re used to if they wind up in a league where they lose to the biggest teams in the sport on a regular basis. Bowlsby’s comment is telling considering people are saying the same thing about Texas moving to the SEC.

Things are not perfect around college football, as one recent negotiation showed. However, Bowlsby is probably right that this makes some sort of breakaway unlikely.
