Bernard Third Former Husky to Join DeBoer at Alabama

Kalen DeBoer's coaching staff continues to sift through its former University of Washington football roster for talent and has received a weekend commitment from wide receiver Germie Bernard to play for Alabama after he took a recruiting visit, according to ESPN.

Bernard is the third player to leave Montlake for Tuscaloosa, joining redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Mack and starting sophomore center Parker Brailsford.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Bernard from Las Vegas stands to be an eventual No. 1 receiver with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

He will forever be remembered for having one of the strangest UW football careers of anyone who's come through the program, with plenty of comings and goings.

Bernard orally committed to Chris Petersen's staff, carried it over to Jimmy Lake's coaches when Petersen stepped down and signed with Kalen DeBoer.

However, when wide-receiver coach Junior Adams left for Oregon, Bernard asked for his scholarship release after being on campus for just a week and he transferred to Michigan State, played against the Huskies and then made it know he wanted to return to Seattle and play for DeBoer.

After catching 34 passes for 419 yards and scoring twice, and rushing for two other TDs, Bernard entered the transfer portal a third time when the UW coaching change took place following the national championship game.

At the Sugar Bowl, Bernard was presented with the suggestion that he was the odds-on choice to become the Huskies' top receiver in 2024, the new Rome Odunze, and he didn't protest.

"I've got great leaders ahead of me," Bernard said of the Odunze comparison. "I learn each and every game and I apply that to me and continue to work as hard as I can. When the time comes, we'll see if that word comes to light."

And it will be in Alabama.
