Arch Manning looks ready to challenge Quinn Ewers in Texas spring game
Ricardo B. Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Texas Longhorns probably didn't expect to be in the situation they're facing entering 2024. When Texas landed 5-star transfer Quinn Ewers from Ohio State in 2022 and landed super recruit Arch Manning, the timeline was supposed to be clear. Ewers should be in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Manning would've been in line to earn the starting job right now.

However, things didn't quite work out that way. While Texas enjoyed a wonderful 2023 season, and Ewers was solid, he opted against entering the draft. Based on his appearance and age, it made sense, but the decision put Steve Sarkisian into an awkward place.

Sarkisian had no choice but to hand Ewers the starting gig entering the Texas spring game. Ewers was an efficient game manager throughout 2023, completing 69% of his passes for 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Texas won 12 games and almost made the national title game.

However, Ewers' issues outside of structure and durability are limiting factors that were mitigated by a tremendous supporting cast. AD Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Jonathon Brooks, and others are gone. This Texas offense is talented but incredibly green.

The spring game wasn't a moment for competition, but Manning took full advantage of his opportunity to show his growth. His arm appeared stronger and his field vision was improved. Ewers' playing time advantage showed, but the offense still lacks next-level complexity to cater to his skill set.

Ewers threw a pick-six off a batted pass on an RPO, and the crowd reacted negatively whenever he missed a throw. Jaydon Blue dropped two accurate deep passes, but Ewers looked exactly like the good but not elite presence he was last fall.

I criticized Ewers' decision to return to Austin in the winter because he was better off entering the NFL or transferring again. As strange as it seems for him to leave, given his resume, the fans want the up-and-coming Manning.

Manning brought his A-game, completing 17-of-21 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns. He connected on two 75-yard scores and played within the offense's rhythm. Sarkisian had more play calls and formations available to him with Manning's ability to manage the pocket.

In talking with NFL scouts, Ewers would've likely been a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Transferring to another power program, even a potential return to Ohio State, would've been possible. Now, he could be on the bench midway through the season if the Longhorns don't start the season hot.

Manning will surely endure his own struggles when it's his time to hit the field. But Texas should use this season as the revamp year before making another big push in 2025 for a title. Ewers may pay the price for misunderstanding the program's natural cycle of talent and misjudging how hot his seat is.
