Wisconsin Women’s Basketball Loses Player to Portal, Marisa Moseley Contract Extended

The native of Seattle came to Madison as a 3-star recruit (ESPN) and the No. 2 player in the 2023 class in the state of Washington (Prep Girls Hoops) after helping her team to an undefeated, state title winning, season in 2022. She was the highest rated member of Wisconsin’s 2023 class.

Jones never played more than 6:01 in any of her 15 appearances as a freshman and ended the season having scored three points, grabbing three rebounds, dishing out two assists, and picking up one steal. After UW’s game at Iowa on Jan. 16, Jones appeared in only four games and never played more than a minute until March 28, when she played 6:01 in a WNIT win over Illinois State.

There isn’t a whole lot more to say about Jones’ one season at Wisconsin because there, uh, aren’t any other data points to look at. Perhaps she’ll want to move closer to home and head to the Pacific Northwest, but who can say for sure.

Wisconsin now has eight players on their roster for next year, two of whom will be true freshmen, and must hit the portal hard themselves in order to fill out even a 5-on-5 full-court practice. The Badgers, who were going to be an extremely young team next year already could really use a couple of veteran players to help guide them back towards an NCAA Tournament bid.

Wisconsin Women’s Basketball Extends Marisa Moseley’s Contract

In other news, Moseley had her contract extended through the 2029 season by the UW Athletics Board on Friday. Greg Gard (MBB), Mike Hastings (MHKY), Mark Johnson (WHKY), Chris Bono (wrestling), and Yuri Suguiyama (swimming & diving) were also given the standard one-year extension.

I saw multiple people online freaking out about this (mostly in relation to Gard) because they didn’t understand that it’s NOT a five-year contract extension, but just the standard, rolling, one-year extension that all UW coaches get so they can show recruits they’ll be around and have job security.
