The University of Wisconsin basketball program’s head coach, Greg Gard, predictably received a one-year contract extension following the Badgers athletics board decision regarding winter sports coaches.

Coach Gard was granted the standard one-year rollover, extending his contract to maintain the customary five years. As a result, Gard’s contract is now effective until May 31, 2029, according to a press release

Wisconsin basketball bounced back after missing the Big Dance last season, finishing with a 22-14 overall record and an 11-9 finish in the Big Ten. The Badgers made it all the way to the conference title game before being defeated by the second-seeded Illinois Fighting Illini.

That earned the Badgers a 5-seed in the NCAA Tournament before suffering an unexpected first-round exit, losing to No. 12 James Madison.

“I think Greg puts us in the best position to be successful into the future,” McIntosh said. “I think Greg has a great understanding of what’s needed in the continued evaluation of our program to get there. It’s a program that’s been evolving with the times that we live in, and I’m excited about some of the things that he and I talked about for the future and the evolution of our program.”

Under his leadership, Wisconsin basketball has achieved the third-best record in the Big Ten during his tenure and holds the eighth-best winning percentage in conference play among all coaches over the last four decades. Gard has also clinched two conference titles, received the Big Ten Coach of the Year award twice, earned a Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award, and has a pair of Sweet 16s on his resume.
