UCLA Basketball: Ex-Bruins Guard Sounds Off on Latest Sports Team Investment
USA TODAY Sports

Following an exciting season with his new LA Clipper team, former UCLA superstar Russell Westbrook has found even more ventures off the court this summer.

2017's NBA MVP recently joined an ownership group in charge of the English soccer team Leeds United, a journey Westbrook is excited to explore alongside his fellow athletes with a stake in the organization.

"There are so many great supporters down there, and so many historic things with Leeds. I'm excited just to get there, to show my support, and figure out ways to be able to keep uplifting what they already have going on."

The English club currently plays in the nation's second division of professional football after they had spent the two prior seasons playing in the renowned Premier League.

One goal is clear for the team and that's to return to the top soccer league in the country and stay there to continue competing with sustained success.

Headed by the 49ers ownership group who hold a majority stake in the club, athletes who are involved with the franchise include famed Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and PGA superstar Jordan Spieth

It's a big step for the former Bruin who seems to already be planning ahead for life outside of basketball.

Though he's been one of the NBA's very best over the past decade, it's clear that Westbrook is closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning of it.

Once UCLA's key cog in their machine, Westbrook is chasing glory in another sport with this move that's clearly intentional to thinking of his future.

In the present, Westbrook is chasing a championship ring with a Clipper team that just needs to stay healthy this season. Should that happen, the LA native could finally capture the elusive ring he's been waiting his entire career for.

Individual glory would mean just as much as helping his new soccer club achieve their own rise to prominence.
