Kentucky forward Tre Mitchell was asked about former West Virginia teammate Joe Toussaint while previewing the NCAA Tournament. Mitchell played with Toussaint, who’s now at Texas Tech, at WVU during the 2022-23 season.

“That’s my dawg. That’ll be my brother until I die. I think nothing but highly of Joe. We were close while I was at West Virginia,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell and Toussaint are both playing in the Pittsburgh subregional this weekend with the chance of facing each other in the second round of the tournament. Kentucky plays 14-seed Oakland while Texas Tech plays 11-seed NC State. Mitchell wouldn’t get into any good stories about Toussaint but did share the two ran into each other this week.

“We crossed paths earlier when our teams were practicing in the same facility. It was good to see him and catch up with him,” Mitchell said. “He’s a funny dude and a great person.”

Mitchell and Toussaint both were set to return to West Virginia this past season, each opting in for their COVID-year options last spring. Once Bob Huggins resigned last June following a DUI arrest, Mitchell and Toussaint both opened their recruitments and eventually committed to new schools as WVU pivoted to interim HC Josh Eilert.

Mitchell is averaging 10.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists during his last season of college basketball. Toussaint has upped his numbers under Grant McCasland, averaging 12.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the Red Raiders.

Toussaint returned to Morgantown to play West Virginia earlier in the month. The 6-foot guard talked after the game about all that went down and why he left WVU.
