The NCAA Transfer Portal officially opened on Monday and the Pitt Panthers have reportedly made early contact with an early entrant.

Per Joe Tipton of On3sports, Jeff Capel and Pitt were one of five schools to reach out to UNC-Greensboro forward Mikael Brown Jones. Other programs to express early interest were Arkansas, Miami, Wisconsin and Georgia.

The 6’8″, 220-pound forward started his college career at VCU before transferring to UNC-Greensboro. The native of Philadelphia scored a career-high 18.9 points and grabbed 7.5 rebounds last season, which earned him First-Team All-Southern Conference. 2023-24 was a breakout season statically for Jones as he averaged 10.1 points and 4.4 rebounds the previous season.

The other impressive number for Jones was his shooting percentage, as he shot 56% from the field and 43.1% from 3-point range.

Jones is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer and will have one season of college eligibility remaining.

As things stand now, Capel has one scholarship available but as time moves on, that could change.

Pitt will be looking to replace leading scorer Blake Hinson along with adding some size and beef to their front court.
