North Carolina Tar Heels’ RJ Davis Reveals Decision On Basketball Future
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

North Carolina Tar Heels guard RJ Davis had a very strong 2023-24 season. He was named an All-American and was a finalist for the Wooden Award, and had a huge decision to make after the season ended.

Would he use his last year of eligibility to return to North Carolina, would he enter the transfer portal and play his final season somewhere else? Or would he begin the next stage of his career and turn pro?

Early Wednesday morning, he revealed his decision. RJ Davis will be returning to North Carolina for a fifth season. He announced on Instagram, with the caption, “I’m back”.

That is huge news for North Carolina, as Davis was one of the best players in the country last season. He averaged 21.2 points per game, knocking down 39.8 percent of his 3-point attempts, which were both career-high numbers.

RJ Davis added 3.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 34.8 minutes per game as the runaway winner of the ACC Player of the Year award. His All-American accolade is the first for the Tar Heels since 2017, per ESPN.

With 2,088 career points, he has a chance to become the ACC’s all-time leading scorer. He is 784 points behind Tyler Hansbrough, which is the same amount that he scored in the 2023-24 campaign. Right now, RJ Davis is fifth on the North Carolina all-time scoring list.

With his return anticipated, the North Carolina Tar Heels have found themselves in the top 10 of the Way Too Early Rankings provided by ESPN. After earning a No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, expectations will be high once again in Chapel Hill next season with RJ Davis back to lead the team.
