Michigan AD Warde Manuel releases statement on postgame skirmish with Wisconsin

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel released a statement on the postgame scuffle that occurred immediately following the men's basketball game against Wisconsin Sunday afternoon.

During the exchanging of handshakes between the teams after the Badgers' 77-63 win, Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard and Wisconsin lead man Greg Gard got into a heated exchange, stemming from Gard calling a timeout with 15 seconds left in the game and his squad up by 15 points. As assistant coaches and players attempted to separate the two, Howard took a swipe at a Badgers assistant coach, sending the situation into an all-out melee.

Addressing reporters after the incident, the former "Fab Five" star and longtime NBA player didn't express any remorse for the act, while Gard defended his own actions as well. Howard is in his third season as Michigan's head coach and was named both the AP Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2020-21.

Gard is in his seventh season at the helm in Wisconsin and earned the Big Ten Coach of the Year Award two seasons ago. The Badgers are now 21-5 and ranked 15th in the nation.

The Wolverines are now 14-11, and after being ranked as high as fourth in the country earlier in the season, they have been unranked since early December.
