On Wednesday, Josiah-Jordan James announced he is coming back to play for his final season of eligibility. It will be his fifth season with the Volunteers. James joins Santiago Vescovi as the second senior from last season to fulfill their final season of eligibility. He is coming off a productive 2023 season, averaging 10 points and almost five rebounds a game

James' return to the Vols team is major for the upcoming 2023-24 season. The Volunteers brought in three transfers from the portal who need to adapt to the program. He can play a big role in leadership for them and the three freshmen the Volunteers brought in from the 2023 class. Excluding the transfers and incoming freshmen, the Vols also have a lot of players returning that came off the bench and could use James' guidance when it comes to playing with higher minutes. In the 2022-23 season, James averaged around 25.3 minutes a game. He also gets a chance to play more games than he did last season. He only played in 24 games.

James missed multiple games last season due to knee soreness that kept him from playing. This gives him a chance to not only help Tennessee throughout the season but also a chance for him to show his game off to NBA scouts. He recently participated in the G League Elite Camp, where he excelled. NBA scouts already have an eye on him. This season gives him a chance to do that. James returning for his fifth season means good experience for the Volunteer team and helps himself and his future basketball career.
