Buddy Boeheim suspended for throwing cheap-shot punch
Syracuse Orange guard Buddy Boeheim Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Buddy Boeheim has been suspended one game for his actions during the ACC Tournament on Wednesday.

Boeheim’s Syracuse Orange were facing Florida State in the 8-9 game of the second round. Syracuse won big, but it was not without controversy.

During the first half, replays showed that Boeheim slugged Wyatt Wilkes in the stomach after a Syracuse basket (video here). The officials missed the play, so Boeheim escaped without punishment. He remained in the game and scored 14 points in 33 minutes.

Buddy released a statement after the game in which he denied the punch was intentional.

The league did not care whether his actions were intentional or not. They called Boeheim’s act “flagrant” and suspended the Syracuse guard for the team’s quarterfinal game against Duke on Thursday.

Duke is the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, so playing without their best player will hurt Syracuse. The Orange are 16-16 on the season. Their are unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament without a huge ACC Tournament run.
