The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goaltender Aaron Dell and defenseman Nicolas Meloche to professional tryout deals for 2023-24.
It appears PTO season is upon us across the NHL with several veterans inking tryouts in recent days, including two with the Blue Jackets.
Nicolas Meloche came to the Wranglers from the San Jose Barracuda in 2022-23 and was a part of their inaugural season roster. The regular blue liner was typically found playing on a line with Yan Kuznetsov on a third pairing.
The Calgary Flames have placed forward Martin Pospisil on waivers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday. Pospisil, 22, suffered a minor injury during training camp but is presumably healthy enough to join the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, should he clear waivers.
A day after announcing their season-opening roster, the Calgary Flames have made another move. Per NorstarBet’s Chris Johnston, the Flames have placed defenceman Nicolas Meloche on waivers.
It’s clear from GM Brad Treliving’s actions that the Flames are intent on building on last season’s 111-point campaign and competing for a Stanley Cup, despite the roster turmoil.
The team retains the rights to Sasha Chmelevski, Jonah Gadjovich, Noah Gregor, Luke Kunin, Mario Ferraro and Kaapo Kahkonen. On Monday afternoon, San Jose Sharks general manager Mike Grier announced that the team has issued qualifying offers to six players and thus retain their negotiating rights.
The Colorado Avalanche — who drafted Meloche — were once high on the defender. Since reaching the Western Conference Final in 2019, the San Jose Sharks have failed to qualify for the postseason for three straight seasons.
As a reminder, being placed in the protocol does not necessarily mean that these players have tested positive for coronavirus.
