Donald Trump: Redskins should keep team name

There has been much debate both within the NFL and in the political world as to whether or not the Washington Redskins should change their team name, but the topic simply hasn't come up much yet in the 2016 election cycle. That is until Monday, when the Donald took on the hot-button issue and made his feelings on the name known.

The New York Times reported Monday that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump feels there is nothing wrong with the Redskins name, and the team has no reason to change it.

"Honestly, I don’t think they should change the name, unless the owner wanted to," Trump said. "I know Indians that are extremely proud of that name." Given Trump's highly controversial statements that have become the calling card of his presidential campaign, this news should be surprising in the least.

The term is widely considered to be derogatory and a slur to to many Native American communities, and there have been several campaigns over the past few years urging Redskins owner Daniel Snyder to change the teams' name. Snyder has remained adamant and steadfast in saying that the team will not make the change.
