Start ‘N’ Park Blog is taking a look back at the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver by driver. This recap will take a look at the driver’s stats, the season’s highlights, the season’s lowlights, what a quick look at next year. This installment takes a look back at Clint Bowyer who finished in the 2nd place in the final standings. 2012 Statistics: Points: 2,361 Position: 2nd Preseason Pick: 19th Starts: 36 Poles: 0 Wins: 3 Top 5s: 10 Top 10s: 23 DNFs: 4 Earnings: $5,546,082 What Was Said Prior To The Season: “I took pity on Clint Bowyer on this one, kicked of our Richard Childress Racing and forced to resurface at Michael Waltrip Racing. My pick of 19th is pretty generous, but Bowyer does have talent and if David Reutimann can get wins for MWR, Bowyer can too. I guess you could say the same about Truex, who has yet to win there either. Well, just call MWR a curse for all drivers. I’m sure 2012 will be a fun year for them.” What Happened In 2012: Probably the driver who did the most with a new opportunity was Bowyer. He help elevate Michael Waltrip Racing from weekly pretenders to weekly contenders. It took him until 16 races to get his first win on the season, then to prove it wasn’t a fluke, he won at Richmond and Charlotte later in the year. With all that, Bowyer season will be more remembered for his dust up with Jeff Gordon at Phoenix. Despite being taken out at that race, he still wouldn’t have won the title with his second place finish at Homestead. Bowyer and company have a lot to be proud of in 2012, including showing the fighting spirit that helped them finish so strong all season long. On To 2013: I hate to say it, but Bowyer getting second might jinx him for 2013. The last few second place finishers just fell off the map their next season, Bowyer is hoping this isn’t the case. My thinking is they over performed from where they were, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be a top 10 team next season.
