It looked like Austin Dillon was well on his way for his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory of the season at Iowa Speedway Saturday night. The youngster took over the lead on Lap 86 when he passed Regan Smith for the top spot off Turn 2 and led every lap until a late pit stop on Lap 201. He dominated those 116 consecutive laps and looked to be the clear cut favorite to take the checkered flag after 250 Laps. Unfortunately, a caution came out which forced everyone to pit for the final time. After several took two-tires, Dillon’s team took four which put him midpack and having to come through the field in the final 48 laps. Once again track position was key in the race as Dillon could only get up to fourth as the checkered flag few. If there were more laps he likely would have put the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet in victory lane, but the four tire stop and track bar adjustment proved to not be the winning move. On the flipside he may not have won, but he did have a good race for his championship hopes. Dillon extended his points lead as he now is up by 14 points over second place Smith. The fourth place finish was Dillon’s fourth top five in the last five races and eighth top 10 in the last 10 races. He’s in the midst of a championship level stretch where the countless good finishes should lead him to the title and a promotion to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for his grandpa Richard Childress Racing in 2014. Dillon should keep his head up after tonight. He drove the wheels off the car tonight and still owns the points lead.   Eric Smith is the Lead Motorsports Writer for Race Review Online.
