PLAYERS: Kevin Harvick
Kevin Harvick has two career wins at Watkins Glen International, but none since 2007. He will look to turn around his recent past at the track and get that third victory, potentially the second win in the Sprint Cup Series. In 2006 Harvick got his first win in the Sprint Cup Series on a road course and backed that up with a Nationwide Series victory the following year. His Nationwide Series record is impeccable, finishing no worse than seventh in seven career starts. Take that seventh place finish out of the equation, and it’s six races finishing 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 4th, 4th, and 3rd. On the Sprint Cup Series side it has been 12 starts with the win, two top-5 finishes, and six top-10 finishes. He has 29 laps led, 28 of which came in the 2006 victory and one lap came in 2004. Harvick is not worried about his statistical background, but the excitement that comes from road racing. “The road-course races have been pretty exciting over the past couple of years. Last year’s race at Watkins Glen (International) had a pretty exciting finish from what I remember, and it’s this type of racing that has really become a part of our sport and helps keep things exciting to watch,” said Harvick. He also knows there are big differences between the two road course races run in the Cup Series. “There is a lot of speed difference. At Watkins Glen (International) you go from turn one, up through the esses and into the inner loop and end up running about 170-180 miles per hour down the backstretch. At Sonoma (Raceway) you’re lucky to get above 100 miles per hour, so speed is definitely the biggest difference,” explained Harvick. The action gets under way Friday with two practice sessions, with Saturday qualifying, and then Sunday is the Cheez-It 355 At The Glen. The race starts at 1 PM EST and can be seen on ESPN.
