Joe Gibbs Racing announced this week that Brian Vickers will be behind the wheel of the Dollar General Toyota fulltime in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series in 2013. Vickers’ 2013 return will come 10 years after he won three Nationwide Series races and became the youngest driver to win the Series Championship at the age of 20. Vickers will make his first official start with Joe Gibbs Racing at Phoenix International Raceway this week piloting the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota for Saturday’s 200 lap Nationwide Series event. VICKERS AND DOLLAR GENERAL REUNITED: Saturday won’t be Vickers’ first time competing under the Dollar General banner. The 29-year-old driver first drove a Dollar General Toyota in 2008 and has made a total of 29 Nationwide Series starts for the Nashville-based company. In Vickers’ 29 starts with Dollar General, he has earned 10 top-five finishes, 21 top-10 finishes and two poles. His paint scheme for Phoenix will be a unique reversal of Dollar General’s familiar colors with a black base and yellow lettering. DOLLAR GENERAL HELPS HURRICANE SANDY VICTIMS: In response to the effects that Hurricane Sandy has had on the northeast portion of our country, Dollar General has stepped up and offered their support by donating $100,000 to aid the American Red Cross in their relief efforts. In addition, the discount retailer is hosting an in-store campaign that allows customers to join Dollar General’s support of the American Red Cross by making a monetary donation at store registers. JOE GIBBS RACING AT PHOENIX: Joe Gibbs Racing’s three-car operation has 42 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Phoenix International Raceway. JGR entries have led 846 laps and completed 7,922 of 8,411 (94.2 percent) laps contested in those events. JGR’s Nationwide Series wins at Phoenix total three with 11 top-five and 25 top-10 finishes. THIS WEEK ON THE NO. 20 DOLLAR GENERAL TOYOTA: Dollar General vendor partners Purina, Stacker2, Energizer, Reese’s, Eveready and Nestle Drumstick will be featured on Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 Toyota Camry this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. RACE INFO: The Great Clips 200 at Phoenix International Raceway kicks off at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 10. Watch and listen live on ESPN, Sirius XM Channel 90 and MRN Radio starting at 3:30 p.m. ET. Brian Vickers on Phoenix: “I’m really looking forward to getting my first start with Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend in Phoenix and to be driving for them fulltime in the Dollar General Toyota in 2013. I am fortunate to have raced with Dollar General before, and I am so excited to be reunited with Rick (Dreiling) and everyone involved with their program. Dollar General is a tremendous company, and its support and enthusiasm for racing is outstanding. I’m very happy to stay in the Toyota family, and when you look at the Nationwide Series over the past several years, no team has dominated like Joe Gibbs Racing. Hopefully we’ll be able to get Dollar General, Toyota and JGR a Nationwide Series Championship next season.” Crew chief Matt Lucas: “Our team is looking forward to running well at Phoenix with Brian Vickers. We’re heading back there with the car that sat on the pole back in March and was capable of challenging for the win. We’re hoping to give Brian a great start to his Joe Gibbs Racing career.”
