Injury Update: Morton, Karstens and McDonald
A quick update on some of the Pirates’ pitchers recovering from injury:
Jeff Karstens is scheduled to start for Altoona on Saturday.
– Charlie Morton pitched Thursday for Altoona, going four innings while allowing two hits (both home runs) and two runs (both earned) with one walk and one strikeout. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said Morton is on a five-day rotation with three...
Catching up: McDonald's shoulder, Baseball America's mock
I haven't done a good job of posting/talking about relevant news stories this week, so let's catch up here.
Travis Sawchik from the Trib reported on Wednesday that James McDonald's shoulder has some inflammation but no structural damage. That's fairly good news. Hopefully his shoulder can recover with some time on the shelf and when he starts throwing again...
Pittsburgh Pirates Disable James McDonald, Recall Josh Harrison
The Pittsburgh Pirates have disabled right-handed pitcher James McDonald from the 15-day disabled list with discomfort in his right shoulder. Taking his spot will be infielder Josh Harrison who was recalled from the Triple-A Indianapolis minor league affiliate. There is no estimated return for McDonald as of yet.
The post Pittsburgh Pirates Disable James McDonald, Recall Josh...
Pittsburgh Pirates' Right Handed Pitcher James McDonald to DL With Sore Shoulder
Pittsburgh Pirates right handed pitcher James McDonald, who was scheduled to start tonight's game against the Seattle Mariners, was placed on the 15 day disabled list due to a sore shoulder.
As reported by James Singer of MLB.com,
"James made us aware this afternoon he would not be able to make the
start tonight," said general manager Neal Huntington. "...
Who Could Take James McDonald’s Spot in the Rotation?
Andy Oliver could be an option to take over for James McDonald.
The Pittsburgh Pirates had Jeanmar Gomez in the rotation after dropping Jonathan Sanchez last week. Gomez was expected to be replaced this weekend by Francisco Liriano. Today, James McDonald went on the 15-day disabled list, which put Gomez back in the rotation for the short-term.
Liriano is still set to join the rotation...
James McDonald scratched tonight, headed for disabled list
James McDonald will not be making his scheduled start against the Mariners tonight and will instead be headed to the disabled list with what's being described as shoulder stiffness. Jeanmar Gomez will start in his place tonight. Last week, I would've told you that this made the impending Francisco Liriano (who should be back on Saturday ) and Charlie Morton decisions easy...
Time for James McDonald to step up
If there ever was a day that the Pirates needed James McDonald to be "Good J-Mac," this day certainly qualifies. They played terribly last night in their least favorite place in the universe, but today is a new day. Jonathan Sanchez's Pirate Rein of Terror is over, as he's been designated for assignment to make room for Bryan Morris in the bullpen. McDonald, of...
Pirates Win Thanks to an Improved McDonald and Strong Lineup Construction

Tonight wasn’t the type of game you’d normally expect the Pirates to win. It’s not the type of matchup you’d expect any team to win. On one side you had the best team in baseball, with a pitcher who entered the game with 20.1 shutout innings to start the season. On the other side you had a team that has been...
First Pitch: All of the Warning Signs are There For a James McDonald Injury

After the first start of the year from James McDonald, I got a question. “What is up with his velocity? Is he injured?”
McDonald’s velocity was down in the first game of the year. He ranged from about 87-92 MPH, but averaged 89 MPH with his fastball. Looking at this chart from FanGraphs...
James McDonald Adds a Slider, Dominates
One of the biggest surprises for the first place Pittsburgh Pirates (!) has been the outstanding performance of James McDonald. Before this year, McDonald had a career ERA above 4.00 and a strikeout-to-walk ratio below two, which caused McDonald to alter his arsenal before the season. This year, he has an ERA and FIP under 3.00, with an xFIP and SIERA just under 3.60, thanks to the...
