The 2013 Grade:1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, Horse Racing’s first big race for three year olds after the Triple Crown series, is beginning to take shape and it’s looking like its going to be an extremely competitive race. Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow, Wood Memorial winner Verrazano, and Kentucky Derby runner-up Golden Soul are among those likely to start in the $1 million, 1 1/8 miles event on July 28. Also expected is Easy Goer Stakes winner Power Broker, who will be trying to give trainer Bob Baffert an unparalleled fourth consecutive win in this race (Lookin’ at Lucky-2010, Coil-2011 and Paynter 2012) and an astonishing seventh winner overall (Point Given-2001, War Emblem-2002 and Roman Ruler-2005). D. Wayne Lukas, who won the 1995 running with iron filly Serena’s Song, plans to run Oxbow in the Haskell and then back in the Travers at Saratoga in last August. Oxbow will be coming into the Haskell off a game second place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 8. The once beaten (in the Kentucky Derby) Verrazano will enter the Haskell off an impressive prep race (the Pegasus Stakes) on June 16 at MonmouthPark. The good looking son of More Than Ready absolutely annihilated his four other rivals by 9 ¼ lengths that day while under a hand ride from regular rider John Velazquez. Golden Soul, who closed from far back in the Kentucky Derby, will be making his first start since a disappointing ninth in the Belmont Stakes. At this writing, others who are being considered for the Haskell include Long Branch winner Micromanage, Swaps Stakes winner Chief Havoc, and Preakness third place finisher Mylute, who possesses quite a closing punch.
