Ranking every 2017 MTV Movie Award-nominated film by its Rotten Tomatoes score

Although this is the first year the MTV Movie Awards will feature television categories, we’d like to stick with the film side for this slideshow. In all, 21 films have earned nominations, with some earning only a single nod, and others amassing as many as seven. To give you an idea of how the critical acclaim stacks up against the MTV nominations, we’ve ranked every film by its score on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you’re unaware, Rotten Tomatoes compiles its “freshness” score based on the reviews of various critics, most of whom are members of writing guilds, film critic associations or major media outlets. It also gives an overall “audience score” based on user reviews, but we’ll only mention that ranking if it’s especially relevant. To see how each film fares in the end, be sure to tune in to the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday, May 7!

Suicide Squad - 25 percent

Perhaps because it was overhyped entirely too much, “Suicide Squad” fell flat according to critics, who collectively gave the film just a 25 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, critics and audiences alike praised the performance of Jared Leto as the Joker (as well as Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn), which is how Leto managed a 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards nod for Best Villain. Audiences were actually somewhat fond of the film, giving it an overall score of 62 percent.

“Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates” snuck into the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards with a single nomination, Best Kiss, for the moment when Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick locked lips. The screwball comedy from director Jake Szymanski is actually based on the true story of two brothers who sought out dates on Craigslist and the ensuing hilarity. Although the audience reception was mixed, critics panned the film, and it currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 35 percent.

Me Before You - 58 percent

Me Before You - 58 percent

The romantic drama “Me Before You” hasn’t received much attention in the press, it owns only a 58 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and many people in the disability rights movement have criticized the overall message. All this probably explains why it only earned a single nomination at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards for Best Tearjerker. However, we should note that the film has already won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie, and it also has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 73 percent, so things could be worse for the heartfelt flick.

Beauty and the Beast - 71 percent

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” earned the second most nominations at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, although it currently possesses a modest Rotten Tomatoes rating of 71 percent. Its five nods are for Movie of the Year, Best Actor in a Movie (Emma Watson), Best Kiss (Emma Watson & Dan Stevens), Best Duo (Josh Gad & Luke Evans) and Best Musical Moment (for "Beauty and the Beast" by Ariana Grande & John Legend). For the record, the original animated version owns a 93 percent freshness rating.

“This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous” earned a nod for Best Documentary at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, but the critical reception wasn’t overwhelming. “Gigi” holds a mixed 73 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although it also has an 80 percent audience score. The Barbara Kopple-directed doc follows the story of transgender woman Gigi Gorgeous — who was assigned male at birth — and her public transition.

Trolls - 74 percent

It might seem odd that the animated kids flick “Trolls” found its way into the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, but it makes sense when you consider the category is Best Musical Moment, and the potential winner is Justin Timberlake (for the song “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”). However, the odds aren’t in favor of  “Trolls, ” as the film owns a 74 percent freshness rating and is up against “Beauty and the Beast,” “La La Land,” “Moana,” “The Get Down,” “Grease: Live” and “Hairspray Live!”

James McAvoy’s portrayal of a psychotic kidnapper with 23 personalities earned him a Best Actor in a Movie nod, which is the only nomination for M. Night Shyamalan's “Split” at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Like MTV, movie critics also had mixed feelings about the horror thriller, which has a freshness rating of 75 percent.

The crude food humor in the animated comedy “Sausage Party” divided audiences right down the middle, but critics praised it overall, and the movie currently owns a freshness rating of 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s star, Seth Rogen, also owns a nomination for Best Comedic Performance for his role as Frank the hot dog. In addition to Rogen, the film features the voices of actors Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz and Edward Norton, to name just a few.

In addition to Movie of the Year, Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” also earned nominations for Best Hero (Felicity Jones) and Next Generation Star (Riz Ahmed). Unlike a lot of the other nominated films, this one was actually rated higher by audiences, who gave it an 88 percent score, versus critics, who gave it a freshness rating of 85 percent.

Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton shine in this Jeff Nichols-directed love story, which earned “Loving” an 89 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards nomination for Best Fight Against the System. “Get Out” and “Hidden Figures” offer some stiff and similar competition in the same category, however.

Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson and a seemingly endless number of other celebrities lent their voices to “The LEGO Batman Movie,” which helped earn it a 90 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned Arnett a nomination for Best Comedic Performance at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Logan - 92 percent

“Logan” has three chances to win at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, as the superhero blockbuster received nominations for Movie of the Year, Best Actor in a Movie (Hugh Jackman) and Best Duo (Jackman & Dafne Keen). Out of the three superhero films that received nods in any category (the others are “Suicide Squad” and “The LEGO Batman Movie”), the 92 percent freshness rating owned by “Logan” is the highest.

Moonlight - 92 percent

Although it lacks a Movie of the Year nod, “Moonlight” still received three other nominations: Best Kiss (Ashton Sanders & Jharrel Jerome), Best Tearjerker (when Paula tells Chiron that she loves him) and Best American Story. We’re guessing writer/director Barry Jenkins isn’t too upset about missing out on a chance at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards’ top prize, as “Moonlight” already won Best Picture at the Academy Awards earlier this year, and it holds a 92 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hidden Figures - 93 percent

Critics and audiences both gave “Hidden Figures” a solid 93 percent rating, and MTV awarded the film three nominations at this year’s Movie & TV Awards. Although it’s not up for Movie of the Year, the biographical drama about NASA’s first African-American female mathematicians has a shot at Best Actor in a Movie and Best Hero (both for Taraji P. Henson), as well as Best Fight Against the System.

La La Land - 93 percent

Although it received an astounding 14 Academy Awards nominations (of which it won five), “La La Land” only got two nods for the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are up for both Best Kiss and, of course, Best Musical Moment for “City of Stars.” Critics were kinder than MTV but not as nice as the Academy, giving “La La Land” an overall freshness rating of 93 percent.

The Edge of Seventeen - 95 percent

“The Edge of Seventeen” hasn’t received a lot of attention at award shows, but a smart script and strong performances by Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick earned it a Movie of the Year nod at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, as well as Best Actor in a Movie for Steinfeld. Critics have reviewed the film favorably, and it has amassed a 95 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Ava DuVernay’s documentary explores the “intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States,” and its message spoke to critics and audiences alike. Its Rotten Tomatoes freshness rating stands at 96 percent, and it was deemed significant enough for inclusion in the Best Documentary category for the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Moana - 96 percent

“Moana” boasts a freshness rating of 96 percent, so it’s no surprise that the animated film found its way into the Best Musical Moment category at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Specifically, the song “How Far I’ll Go” got the nomination, and 16-year-old Auli’i Cravalho will get the golden popcorn if it wins.

Raoul Peck brought writer James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, “Remember This House,” to life in the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” which earned almost unanimous praise from critics, a 99 percent freshness rating, and a 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards nomination for Best Documentary. The film chronicles Baldwin’s memories of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

Jordan Peele’s horror comedy “Get Out” has seven nominations at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the most for any film this year. No surprise, as “Get Out” owns a 99 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an 89 percent audience rating. In addition to Movie of the Year, “Get Out” is up for Best Actor in a Movie (Daniel Kaluuya), Best Villain (Allison Williams), Best Comedic Performance (Lil Rel Howery), Best Duo (Daniel Kaluuya & Lil Rel Howery) and Best Fight Against the System, as well as a Next Generation nod for Kaluuya.

2016 was a resurgent year for the story of O.J. Simpson and his famous murder trial. While FX’s “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” offered an entertaining, semi-fictionalized account and cleaned up at the Emmy’s, Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” was presented in a more traditional documentary format and further examined O.J.’s rise to fame and subsequent downfall. It owns a perfect 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and rightfully earned a nomination for Best Documentary at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. It already won in the same category at the 89th Academy Awards.
