Predicting the winners at the 2017 MTV Movie and TV Awards

2017 is the year of flipping the script, and the newly christened MTV Movie and TV Awards is not falling behind the trend. In this "golden age of content," the Silver Screen and the Small Screen are matching up in the same categories, and women and men are competing head-to-head for Best Actor in a Movie and Best Actor in a TV Show. "Get Out" leads the way with seven total nominations, but will it manage to get the recognition it deserves from the voting public?

We have predicted who will take home the "Golden Popcorn" for the 16 ever-shifting categories. MTV always likes to keep it fresh.

Nominees

"Beauty and the Beast"

"The Edge of Seventeen"

"Get Out"

"Logan"

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

Winner: "Get Out"

Jordan Peele's comedy horror taps into the zeitgeist of racial tension with such satirical skill that it cannot be considered as anything but a cinematic game-changer.

Nominees

"Atlanta"

"Game of Thrones"

"Insecure"

"Pretty Little Liars"

"Stranger Things"

This Is Us

Winner: "Stranger Things"

The Netflix science fiction-horror series was the perfect cocktail of one part "The Goonies," one part Future Islands synth-throwback soundtrack, and one part screaming out names (or numbers - see what I did there?). It was the Belle of the Ball in a year when Belle actually appeared not only as a Disney princess but as a minor character named Barb.

Nominees

Taraji P. Henson – "Hidden Figures"

Daniel Kaluuya – "Get Out"

Hugh Jackman – "Logan"

James McAvoy – "Split"

Hailee Steinfeld – "The Edge of Seventeen"

Emma Watson – "Beauty and the Beast"

Winner: Emma Watson

It is going to be difficult for anyone to beat the Disney-Hermione Granger voting bloc, but that is not to say that Hugh Jackman or Daniel Kaluuya don't deserve consideration. Still, Emma Watson is the heart and soul of the live-action blockbuster.

Nominees

Millie Bobby Brown – "Stranger Things"

Emilia Clarke – "Game of Thrones"

Donald Glover – "Atlanta"

Jeffrey Dean Morgan – "The Walking Dead"

Mandy Moore – "This Is Us"

Gina Rodriguez – "Jane The Virgin"

Winner: Donald Glover

Riding on the wave following his Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Donald Glover is the favorite in this highly competitive category. It could really go any way, but as the creator of the series, Glover's work has multiple layers of connection and yields the win.

Nominees

Will Arnett – "The Lego Batman Movie"

Adam DeVine – "Workaholics"

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson – "Broad City"

Lil Rel Howery – "Get Out"

Seth Rogen – "Sausage Party"

Seth MacFarlane – "Family Guy"

Winner: Lil Rel Howery

The scene-stealing TSA agent and best-friend-to-the-protagonist added some much needed levity and also dynamic heroism to the scary reality of "Get Out."

Nominees

Stephen Amell – "Arrow"

Millie Bobby Brown – "Stranger Things"

Mike Colter – "Luke Cage"

Grant Gustin – "The Flash"

Taraji P. Henson – "Hidden Figures"

Felicity Jones – "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

Winner: Millie Bobby Brown

Can a psychokinetic, preteen girl defeat three comic book heroes, a female astronaut, and the savior of cinema's greatest plot-hole to win Best Hero? Yes, yes she can. And Leggo her Eggos!

Best Villain

Nominees

Wes Bentley – "American Horror Story: Roanoke"

Demogorgon – "Stranger Things"

Jared Leto – "Suicide Squad"

Jeffrey Dean Morgan – "The Walking Dead"

Allison Williams – "Get Out"

Winner: Allison Williams

As much as I would love to see the Demogorgon take the Golden Popcorn back to the "Upside Down," Allison Williams takes home the award for her intense portrayal of "psycho white-girl privilege."

Best Kiss

Nominees

Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick – "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates"
Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard – "Empire"
Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome – "Moonlight"
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling – "La La Land"
Emma Watson and Dan Stevens – "Beauty and the Beast"

Winner: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling

While the real winners are Hollywood for advancing a story about the relationship of two gay African-American men and the American public for generously receiving it, I think the MTV vote is going to go for the glam of Stone and Gosling. Unless, of course, there is another Oscars-level mix-up in the cards.

I Am Not Your Negro
O.J.: Made in America
This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous
TIME: The Kalief Browder Story

Winner: "O.J.: Made in America"

The nearly eight hour coverage of the O.J. Simpson saga is a universally acclaimed success, as well as ESPN’s best offering from the "30 for 30" series.

Best Reality Competition

Nominees

"America's Got Talent"
"The Bachelor"
"MasterChef Junior"
"RuPaul's Drag Race"
"The Voice"

Winner: "America’s Got Talent"

"America’s Got Talent" was one of the few watchable programs during the summer and even competed in the ratings with "The Voice" which had the cushy environment of the fall and spring seasons. Viewers were fully charmed by Season 11, particularly by the ukulele-playing, pixie-voiced winner, Grace VanderWaal.

Best Host

Nominees

Samantha Bee – "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee"
Ellen DeGeneres – "The Ellen DeGeneres Show"
Trevor Noah – "The Daily Show"
John Oliver – "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver"
RuPaul – "RuPaul's Drag Race"

Winner: John Oliver

It may be a toss-up between Oliver and Bee, but the HBO series helmed by John Oliver was more consistent in wading through the dumpster fire of the recent past and present danger thanks to the host’s biting wit and idiosyncratic nerdiness.

Nominees

"Game of Thrones" – Hodor's death
"Grey's Anatomy" – Meredith tells her children about Derek's death
"Me Before You" – Will tells Louisa he can't stay with her
"Moonlight" – Paula tells Chiron that she loves him
"This Is Us" – Jack and Randall at karate

Winner: Hodor’s death

You try saying your only word of dialogue one thousand different ways over the course of five-and-a-half seasons and tell me that this wasn’t the most devastating event in entertainment since the "Six Feet Under" finale. Hodor? Hodor, indeed.

Riz Ahmed – "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"
Daniel Kaluuya – "Get Out"
Chrissy Metz – "This Is Us"
Issa Rae – "Insecure"
Yara Shahidi – "Black-ish"

Winner: Daniel Kaluuya

The breakout star of "Get Out" is set to explode thanks to his emotionally dynamic performance. It is a safe bet to put some money on Chrissy Metz as well.

Best Duo

Nominees

Josh Gad and Luke Evans – "Beauty and the Beast"
Brian Tyree Henry and Keith Stanfield – "Atlanta"
Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen – "Logan"
Daniel Kaluuya and Lil Rel Howery – "Get Out"
Adam Levine and Blake Shelton – "The Voice"
Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg – "Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party"

Winner: Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen

If there is any supporting evidence to explain why Hugh Jackman didn’t receive a Best Hero nomination, it is clearly Dafne Keen. Their shared screen-time is what made"Logan" the best X-men movie in a while.

Best American Story

Nominees

"Black-ish"
"Fresh Off the Boat"
"Jane the Virgin"
"Moonlight"
"Transparent"

Winner: "Moonlight"

While this category may be an overshoot on the part of MTV, "Moonlight" certainly fits the bill of the Best American Story of this year as evidenced by the courage of its creators in sharing this great, previously untold story. The critically acclaimed reception goes to show how far we’ve come as a nation in spite of the racial, moral or social injustices faced on a daily basis.

Nominees

"Get Out"
"Hidden Figures"
"Loving"
"Luke Cage"
"Mr. Robot"

Winner: "Get Out"

Writer and director Jordan Peele singlehandedly flipped the whole Hollywood system on its head with his searing, racially tense, horror comedy. "Get Out" received seven total nominations, and with five predictive wins, it easily gives the best fight against the system.
