Biggest series snubs of the 2016 Emmy nominations

It’s 2016. There should be no way that the statement I’m about to make needs to be said: Where’s the love for the ladies?

The Academy of Television Art and Sciences has included series’ like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Veep, but left off the cutting room floor were a number of great shows with strong female leads. But if the Emmy’s aren’t going to recognize the greatness of those shows, or the other equally amazing shows on this list, we at Yardbarker will.

Here are the biggest snubs in the comedy and drama series category at the 2016 Emmy Awards

Comedy

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Many shows have featured a crazy ex-girlfriend trope as way to throw a wrench into a main characters life, but how many shows have a crazy ex-girlfriend as the lead and have lived to tell the tale? The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend features the misadventures of one unpredictable ex-lover played by Rachel Bloom. But genius lies in its execution with original songs incorporated in the story to perfection. It will not be at the Emmys this year under the best comedy series category, but don’t be surprised if it gets recognition in the years to come.

BoJack Horseman

Netflix shows are on the rise at the Emmys, but Netflix Original BoJack Horseman got left out. What gives, academy? Oh, that’s right. The manimal centric show’s charm draws from its painfully accurate depiction of Hollywood politics and fame. The satirical comedy has droves of fans outside and within the industry, but the sharp commentary may have been too cutting for some academy members. Not only were they excluded from the best comedy category; they couldn’t even break into the best animated series group.

Girls

HBO gets a lot of love at the Emmy’s, but Girls will not be one of them. Lena Dunham’s comedy centered around four women trying to make it in New York. The show focuses on the everyday grind of being a woman in the big city, dealing with everything from body image, abortion and street harassment. However, the Dunham written, and Judd Apatow produced show was unable to be nominated for best comedy series; an honor they have not received since 2013.

Broad City

Like Girls on HBO, Broad City follows women, two in this case, adventuring their way through life in New York City. Unlike Girls on HBO, Broad City is broadcasted on Comedy Central, which is a corporal to HBO’s general when it comes to prestige with the academy. Despite being one of the most wonderfully ridiculous shows about being woman, they will not be a part of the festivities at the Emmy’s this year.

Jane the Virgin

Rounding out the snubbed comedies is this charming show about a strange case of mistaken immaculate conception. Jane the Virgin follows the life of Jane Villanueva, a Venezuelan-American woman whose staunch chastity did not prevent her from getting pregnant via accidental artificial insemination. Her journey through pregnancy and subsequent birth of her child is perfectly executed by lead actress Gina Rodriguez, but it was not enough get this heartwarming show about the importance of family to the Emmys.

Drama

Outlander

Starz hasn’t had much success in the meaty categories at the Emmys, and that streak continues with the exclusion of Outlander. The British time-traveling drama was a home run with viewers and critics alike, but the Emmy’s didn’t honor it with a nomination. Knock out performances by Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan were overlooked too, but it’s only a matter of time before the show gets the recognition it deserves.

Orange is the New Black

The ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary find themselves in an unfamiliar place, locked on the outside looking in at the Emmys. After being nominated for best comedy in 2014 and best drama in 2015, the popular Netflix show finds itself without a nomination other than casting. Maybe the fourth season that set the internet on fire will get a little more love next year.

Billions

Not even two Emmy winners were able to get the attention of the academy. Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis should have driven this tense train right to the top of the Emmys, but they were unable to secure the show a nomination in its first year of existence. With their history at the Emmys, it would’ve been safe to say that the show would get a few nominations, but they came up with nothing in 2016.

The Leftovers

Another HBO show that was left out in the cold. For three years, the story of the “sudden departure” and the people left behind has been honored by other academies. After a generally good first season, things were ramped up in second season enough for it to be nominated for the best drama series at the Critics’ Choice award. The Emmy’s still haven’t made the call yet, but the show is trending up.

Jessica Jones

Even in a saturated genre, there was no better antihero than Jessica Jones last year. However, yes, she was gruff, rough and didn’t take crap from no one, but what really stood out about the show were the issues that the show dealt with. Rape, assault and PTSD were all heavily touched upon in the show and done so in a dignified fashion. Throw in a slick noir feel, and there is no excuse that the show shouldn’t have gotten more nominations than the main title design and theme music.
