15 People The Golden Globes Seem To Love, But The Oscars Seem To Hate

Every year, movie lovers with an eye towards winning the Oscar pool at their office pore over the Golden Globes religiously. The awards are universally viewed as a pretty good predictor of what will happen when the Oscars finally roll around -- a kind of pregame for the main event.

That said, this isn't entirely true. There are plenty of actors and talents that clean house at the Golden Globes but have been, for one reason or another, unable to match that same success at the Academy Awards. Here are 15 of the most notable.

Bill Murray

Wait, really? Bill Murray never won an Oscar? Hold on a sec, let me check my notes... Yup, there's no mistake. America's favorite comedic actor and Cubs fan has never won that little golden statue. In fact, he was only ever nominated once, for his performance in "Lost in Translation." That said, he's been honored by the Golden Globes multiple times, racking up five nominations and one win (again, for "Lost in Translation").

Speaking of "Lost in Translation," Scarlett Johansson is another actor who has been completely overlooked by the Oscar committee. And though as of yet she hasn't been able to take home a Golden Globe, she has four nominations across three consecutive years, which is no small feat.

David Oyelowo

David Oyelowo might be the best dramatic actor working today to have never won either a Golden Globe or an Oscar. That said, the Golden Globes committee has at least thrown him a few nominations for his hard work on "Nightingale" and "Selma."

John Goodman

John Goodman is a strange case. Despite all the amazing work he has done on the silver screen in movies like "Barton Fink," "The Big Lebowski," "Monsters, Inc," "Argo," "Trumbo," and countless others, he was never able to receive an Oscar nomination. The good news, however, is that he has been nominated for five Golden Globes, and won one. The bad news? All but one of the nominations were for "Roseanne."

Johnny Depp

Maybe Johnny Depp is just too weird for the Oscars. Despite being nominated three times for the award, he was never able to actually win one. That said, the Golden Globes have been much kinder to the man, awarding him 10 nominations across his career, and a win for his work in "Sweeney Todd."

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has as many Golden Globe wins as he has Oscar nominations. Let that sink in for a second.

Yes, over his decades-long career, Cruise has never been able to win an Oscar. That said, the Golden Globes can't seem to get enough of his charming smile, so they have handed him three wins and seven nominations since 1984.

Madonna

The multi-talented Madonna might not be widely thought of an actress, or even as someone who writes songs for movies, but the Golden Globes would beg to differ. Despite not having a single Oscar nomination to her name, she has racked up seven Golden Globe nominations, capped off by two wins -- one for Best Original Song from the movie "W.E.," and one for her role in 1996's "Evita."

Pam Grier

Despite the fact that she arguably played the most interesting, most developed, and most engaging character in any Quentin Tarantino movie ever -- and did it with aplomb -- Pam Grier has been criminally overlooked by both the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

The Globes did, at least, give her a nomination for her work on "Jackie Brown," so there's that, at the very least.

Will Smith

It might be surprising to learn that Will Smith, one of the most beloved actors still working today, hasn't yet won either an Oscar or a Golden Globe. That said, the Golden Globes have been much kinder to the man, honoring him with five nominations to the Academy Awards' two.

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore has by no means been overlooked by the Academy, having been nominated four times with one win, but the Golden Globes can't seem to get enough of the actress. She has nine nominations at the Golden Globes, with two wins, in addition to a special award she shared with dozens of other actors for her work on "Short Cuts."

Claire Danes

At least Claire Danes's hit rate is high. Despite never being nominated for an Oscar, she has been nominated for five Golden Globes -- and taken the award home four out of those five times.

That said, Danes has struggled to be recognized for her work on the silver screen. Her Golden Globe wins and nominations are exclusively for television series or made-for-TV movies.

Idris Elba

It's gotta be only a matter of time before Idris Elba wins an Oscar, right? He's one of the best actors currently working today. And despite being completely ignored by the Academy, the Golden Globes seem to like him a bit better. Since 2011, he's racked up six nominations and one win at the event.

Emily Blunt

Despite her great work in movies like "The Devil Wears Prada," "Sicario," and others, Emily Blunt has exactly zero Academy Award nominations thus far. She's been far luckier at the Golden Globes, racking up five nominations and one win for her work on "Gideon's Daughter."

Glenn Close

They should call her Glenn Close-But-No-Cigar. Despite six nominations at the Academy Awards, Glenn Close has never won.

Her Golden Globes resume, however, is staggering. She has been nominated an insane 13 times since 1985. That said, despite those honors, she was still only able to win the award twice.

Leonardo DiCaprio

It took until 2016 for Leonardo DiCaprio to finally win an Oscar. That's a full 11 years after he won his first Golden Globe for his work on "The Aviator." For some reason, the Golden Globes seem to love Leo's work a whole lot more than the Academy does. He has a staggering 11 nominations and three wins at the event.
