The Queensbury Rules:
Juan Manuel Marquez
Don't ever say that TQBR is not interested in the future of sport. Last week's schedule brought you the innovation that is Taser Ball, this week it's blindfolded boxing. Sure, they thought of it in 1949, but it probably just needed better PR. Hell, it looks like Paul Williams learnt some of his technique by watching that tape. Hohoho. Enough joviality. On to the week's schedule, which features some pretty damn good fights. There's a double header on HBO with Marcos Maidana vs. Devon Alexander at welterweight with Adrien Broner vs. Eloy Perez at junior lightweight sharing the billing. There's an interesting heavyweight match up from Germany in the form of former cruiserweight boss man Marco Huck vs. Alexander Povetkin, a former Olympic gold medallist. Add to that some decent shows on ESPN and Showtime, Welsh light heavyweight Nathan Cleverly fighting and the usual goings on and you have yourself a decent weekend of pooooogilism.
BEST OF MAXIM
For a fighter who is 22-1 with 13 knockouts, there are a lot of questions surrounding St. Louis native Devon Alexander that he is looking to answer in Saturday night's fight with Marcos Maidana of Argentina.
Alexander is making his debut in the welterweight division and some wonder if he will be able to deal with the hard-punching Maidana's power. In his last few outings...
Both Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana, who face one another Saturday on HBO, have spent the better part of the past few years hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Against Andriy Kotelnik and Lucas Matthysse, Alexander barely won, and plenty of observers don't think he deserved to win either of them at all. Marcos Maidana nearly lost to Victor Ortiz, DeMarcus Corley and Erik...
It all goes down this saturday on HBO.
Boxing History From The Lou.
Professional boxing is back in St. Louis this weekend for an HBO Boxing After Dark card. The event will be headlined by local star and former jr. welterweight champion Devon Alexander "The Great" who will battle the rough and rugged Argentinian Marcos "El Chino" Maidana.
Alexander (22 - 1 w/13 KO's), who hasn't fought since a controversial win...
KO artist Marcos Maidana might need one vs. St. Louis native Devon Alexander
Though they both share Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions as their promoter, junior lightweights Adrien Broner and Eloy Perez have taken considerably different routes to Saturday night's destination: a 12-round HBO-televised co-feature slot from St. Louis, Mo. underneath the welterweight clash between Devon Alexander and Marcos Maidana. Broner, 22, of Cincinnati,...
Before the HBO cameras roll for the highly anticipated February 25"Arch Enemies" doubleheader featuring hometown hero Devon Alexander "The Great" against Marcos "El Chino" Maidana and the WBO Junior Lighweight Word Championship fight between Adrien "The Problem" Broner and Eloy "Prince" Perez, unbeatens Sharif "The Lion...
