Earlier this month Raiders owner Mark Davis fired team PR director Zak Gilbert reportedly for an SI article that was not favorable in the way it depicted his late father Al Davis. It was perhaps a gratuitous move, one that made many think, “Oh, here go the Raiders being the Raiders.”
One of the more interesting ostensible plot lines to come from the firing was that it possibly meant there was trouble in paradise between Davis and Reggie McKenzie. Davis personally hired McKenzie as GM, and McKenzie personally hired Gilbert. And, therefore, by firing McKenzie’s own guy, Davis was intentionally undercutting McKenzie’s power to send a message.
HOGWASH, says Davis, as he told Monte Poole:
“Not at all. Reggie understands why I made the decision I made. Look, I understand what Reggie is trying to do. Reggie’s fine. He’s the one guy that I’ve hired. I’ve got to give him room to do his job.”
