PLAYERS: Arthur Abraham
For Arthur Abraham (34-3, 27 KOs), it was business as usual, albeit against a spirited Piotr Wilczewski (30-3, 10 KOs). The German former middleweight champion took a one-sided unanimous decision by scores of 118-109, 118-109, and 119-108. Abraham fought as he always does -- high guard, intelligent movement, and wide punches in flurries that smartly steal rounds. Wilczewski would do his best to press the action and definitely threw enough punches to give the impression of a competitive bout. However, most of what was thrown by the Polish fighter missed the target and/or was blocked by a defense-minded Abraham. When the German defending WBO European super middleweight titlist would open up, he would hurt the Pole with heavy-handed shots to the head and body. But as has always been the case with Abraham, he only threw enough to win rounds and only seemed to press the action at the end of the fight when the challenger was clearly tired and bothered by the punches. At the end of the bout, it was a good, but mostly ineffectual effort by Wilczewski and Abraham, deservedly, took the victory. On The Boxing Tribune's scorecard, Abraham took the decision by a score of 116-111 (Wilczewski would have a point deducted from him in the seventh round for excessive holding). On the undercard, Germany's Eduard Gutknecht (24-1, 9 KOs) successfully defended his European light heavyweight title against France's Tony Averlant (17-6-2, 4 KOs) via close split decision (115-113, 114-113, 113-115). Also, Poland's cruiserweight prospect, Mateusz Masternak (26-0, 20 KOs) stopped Mexico's Felipe Romero (15-5-1, 10 KOs) in the 10th and final round of their contest.
