Czech Republic 5.50
The Czech Republic won easy Group A and Portugal played well in coming in 2nd in the Group of Death. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 2 goals in the solid 2-1 win over Holland in their last group match and after having defensive issues coming into the Euro Championships Portugal played pretty well in this competition giving up 4 goals in 3 matches.
The Czechs did not look like a good bet to make it out of Group A after their first match where they gave up 4 goals facing Russia, but they won their last 2 matches. Vaclav Pilar leads the team with 2 goals so far and his play will be key. Czech Republic also has to play good defense, which they did only giving up 1 goal in their last 2 group matches, and they have to pounce on counter attack opportunities.
Germany is the big favorite in this match and with good reason since they are stacked at they won all 3 of their group matches. Mario Gomez is tied for the lead in the Euro with 3 goals and the German defense only gave up 2 goals in 3 group matches.
Greece was a little bit of a surprise making it to the knockout stage, but their 1-0 win over Russia vaulted them to the quarters. The Greeks are all about defense and they may have to rely on the counter attack to score. Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis will miss the match since he had a red card in the last group match.
Spain is the favorite in this match, as well as to win the Euro, and while they throttled Ireland in Group play they drew with Italy 1-1 and needed a late goal to beat Croatia 1-0. Fernando Torres needs to step up in this match and the midfield led by Xavi has to win the time of possession battle.
G Iker Casillas has played well in the Euro and a solid France offense led by Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema will test him. Spain is stacked, but they have not played great against solid teams in the Euro so far.
This may be the best quarterfinals match up and each team has yet to lose in the Euro. Wayne Rooney sat out the first 2 group matches due to a suspension, but scored in the last Group match in England’s 1-0 win over Ukraine.
G Joe Hart has played well in the competition so far and he has to keep up his solid play. Italy played to a couple of draws in Group C and beat Ireland and their solid defense has only given up 2 goals in their 3 matches.
Italy has to get good offensive play, but their midfield play and defense, led by G Gianluigi Buffon, has played well. The one big question for Italy is which player will step up on offense?
