Sports Illustrated has reported that San Diego Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer may join the Chicago Cubs to become their new GM. Theo Epstein would assume the title of president of baseball operations while Hoyer would then become general manager.
Jed Hoyer does have a working relationship with Theo Epstein as they both worked in Boston with Hoyer serving as senior VP and assistant GM of the Boston Red Sox. If the Cubs do hire Jed Hoyer, the Padres would then name vice president of baseball operations and former Diamondbacks General Manager Josh Brynes as its new GM.
Compensation for the Padres is not expected to be a big issue as Cubs owner Tom Ricketts has a good relationship with Padres executive Jeff Moorad.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox and Cubs compensation negotiations still prove to be a sticking point but is expected to be ironed out sometime next week. The Red Sox have previously asked for Matt Garza, but the Cubs stand firm in not sending anyone from their major league club to Boston.
