The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in a surprising dogfight with the Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the NL Central standings – and in the entire Senior Circuit – heading into July, but they're atop the odds to win the NL Pennant at the sportsbooks.
A stumble over the past couple of weeks has put the Cardinals neck-and-neck with the surging Pirates in the NL Central standings, but the latest MLB futures at the sportsbooks still have St. Louis pegged as the 3/1 favorites to win the NL Pennant.
And they are not far behind in odds to win the World Series either, according to several online sportsbooks.
The Pirates, meanwhile, are back in fourth on that latest NL Pennant odds list with oddsmakers and bettors still waiting to see if they can sustain their recent high level of play.
Pittsburgh holds down 6/1 odds to win the National League Pennant, putting them behind the Cardinals, Atlanta Braves (17/4), and Cincinnati Reds (11/2) on that chart.
St. Louis has three games on deck against the Angels in Los Angeles starting on Tuesday night this week before they head back home for a three-game weekend series against the basement-dwelling Miami Marlins.
The Cardinals disappointed their supporters on the MLB betting lines when they played in Miami back in the middle of June, somehow managing to lose two of the three games to the Marlins in that span. The teams scored 38 combined runs in those contests to put up three OVER results.
Pittsburgh will be at home to face the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game series starting on Tuesday night this week before they play the Chicago Cubs three times at Wrigley Field on the weekend.
The Pirates are 3-1 against the Phillies so far this season, and they've managed to put up a 6-3 record versus the Cubs in nine games. Seven of those nine Pirates vs. Cubs matchups turned out to be UNDER results.
Heading back to the NL Pennant odds, the Washington Nationals trail the leaders at 13/2 on those MLB futures, with the San Francisco Giants at 8/1, the Arizona Diamondbacks at 9/1, and the Los Angeles Dodgers at 10/1. The Colorado Rockies (18/1), San Diego Padres (20/1), and Philadelphia Phillies (22/1) follow that top group.
The NL Pennant longshots are the New York Mets (100/1), Chicago Cubs (200/1), and Milwaukee Brewers (200/1), with the Miami Marlins back in the basement at 1500/1.
